Scott Snyder Releases His Inner-Cosplayer for Halloween
Writer Scott Snyder is known for his work with iconic DC characters and in the horror genre, but for Halloween, he’s embracing the all-ages manga and anime franchise My Hero Academia, with a family picture that goes beyond, plus ultra!
The fan-favorite Batman writer tweeted a photo of his family dressed as some of the most popular heroes from Kōhei Horikoshi’s beloved franchise. Snyder strikes a pose as All-Might, the number one Pro Hero in the franchise’s universe; his two sons dress as Deku and Bakugo, two of U.A. High School’s most promising students who aspire to become Pro Heroes; and his wife Jeanie transforms into Uraraka, another talented U.A. student who has the ability to manipulate an object’s — or person’s — gravity.
Happy early Halloween from us to you! Plus Ultra! #MyHeroAcademia #disneyworld #dadlife pic.twitter.com/KDSHzoJdaV
— Scott Snyd(ofthelivingdead)er (@Ssnyder1835) October 26, 2018
My Hero Academia’s popularity continues to grow. The manga is on its 15th volume, a new video game, My Hero One’s Justice, was just released, and the anime is on its third season. A live-action movie is also in the works, and only time will tell whether it will win over fans and further expand the franchise’s popularity.

DC’s Shazam Comic Will Resolve a 5-Year-Old Plotline
While Billy Batson, better known to comic book readers as the mighty Shazam, was introduced to modern audiences during DC Comics’ New 52 era by writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank, the iconic character has been absent since the publisher launched its DC Rebirth initiative in 2016.
Ahead of the character’s upcoming relaunch next month, Johns assures fans the new ongoing series will pick up from the events of the last time Batson was last seen in the comics. In the final pages of the New 52 Shazam story five years ago, the superhero’s longtime enemy Doctor Sivana was seen meeting the parasitic, mind-controlling alien worm Mister Mind for the first time.
RELATED: NYCC: Geoff Johns Shares New Shazam Art, Story Details
“Mister Mind’s aspirations are incredibly big, and just because he’s a small size, he might be funny to us and he might be underestimated by everybody around him, but his point of view is a pretty valid point of view,” explained Johns in an interview with IGN, confirming that the five year cliffhanger will be resolved. “I think Mister Mind, because he’s a magical creature, he’s got more power. And more importantly, he’s got a lot of ambition. He’s very humorous in a lot of ways, but he’s also very threatening.”
Advance solicitation information from DC Comics in August confirmed Sivana and Mister Mind would indeed be teaming up to face Shazam as the new series’ main antagonists in the debut issue. With two of Billy’s greatest foes working together, the young superhero will need all the help he can get to stop them.

Shazam! #1 is written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Dale Eaglesham. It is scheduled to go on sale on November 21 by DC Comics.

NASA Names New Constellations After Hulk, Thor & Godzilla
The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes officially make the jump from the Marvel Universe to a celestial body, as NASA has named two of its 21 new gamma-ray constellations after the Incredible Hulk and Thor — specifically, the god of thunder’s enchanted hammer Mjölnir.
The other 21 constellations include nods to Godzilla, The Little Prince, the U.S.S. Enterprise from Star Trek, and the TARDIS from Doctor Who.
RELATED: Marvel Just Revealed The Strongest Hulk There Is – And It’s Not Bruce Banner
NASA is commemorating the 10th anniversary of the agency’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, acquired on June 11, 2008 in partnership with France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and the United States Department of Energy. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, also known as the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope or GLAST, is used to detect and survey gamma-rays in outer space.
NASA defines gamma-rays as the “strongest form of light,” powerful enough to convert into matter under the right circumstances. According to the space agency, two of its newest gamma-ray constellations were so aptly named because Bruce Banner was transformed by gamma radiation into the Hulk, while Godzilla’s heat ray resembles fiery gamma-ray jets typically associated with black holes and neutron stars.
The explanation behind Mjölnir is tied more directly to the enchanted hammer’s mythological roots, symbolizing the investigation of “Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) associated with lightning from thunderstorms on Earth.”

All 21 constellations can be viewed on NASA’s website, which features in-depth descriptions and an interactive map.

Godzilla: Aftershock: The King of Monsters Rises From Legendary Comics
In Spring 2019, ahead of the release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters comes an all-new companion graphic novel from Legendary Comics — Godzilla: Aftershock, written by Arvid Nelson and illustrated by Drew Edward Johnson.
“Godzilla: Aftershock is yet another exhilarating entry into the canon of the MonsterVerse, and it is especially exciting to introduce fans to a brand new original monster unique to the comic, but true to the legacy of Godzilla,” Senior Vice President of Legendary Comics Robert Napton said in a statement.
RELATED: Key Godzilla: King of the Monsters Role Reportedly Revealed
Here is the synopsis of the graphic novel from Legendary:
Continuing the story of 2014’s Godzilla after the catastrophic events in San Francisco, the King of the Monsters finds himself once again threatened as a terrifying new foe rises from the depths of the earth, unleashing a series of devastating earthquakes and driven by an unstoppable primal instinct that will test the King of Monsters like never before.
Additionally, fans attending Los Angeles Comic Con on October 27 are invited to attend Legendary’s MonsterVerse panel for a chance to receive a free limited-edition Godzilla: Aftershock poster, available only to the first 500 fans in attendance.
Arriving March 22, 2019, director Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds and Zhang Ziyi.

Mark Waid Launches Crowdfunding Campaign to Fight ComicsGate Lawsuit
Comic book author Mark Waid has started a GoFundMe campaign to collect money for legal fees related to a lawsuit filed by Richard C. Meyer, a leader in the online ComicsGate movement. The lawsuit alleges that Waid called Antarctic Press, which Meyer had formed an agreement with to publish his Jawbreakers series, and convinced the publisher to drop the title.
Meyer claims this amounts to an interference with the contract he had established with Antarctic, as well as defamation due to the alleged content of the phone call. In a post announcing the launch of the crowdfunding campaign, Waid maintained his innocence and explained why such a campaign was necessary in the first place.
RELATED: Star Wars Writer Chuck Wendig’s Twitter Appears to Have Been Targeted by Bots
“Even though I am confident that the claims made against me are entirely without merit, lawsuits are time-consuming and very expensive,” said Waid. “Still, I have never backed down from bullies, especially those who denigrate my friends, colleagues and the values our community stands for, and while I am not a rich man, you have my solemn promise that I will fight this fight no matter the personal cost.”
Meyer is a known provocateur in the comics industry, perhaps most recognizable from his usage of the Diversity & Comics Twitter handle, which he has used to disseminate criticism and harassment directed at minority creators in the industry. Meyer and his followers believe that the industry has become too progressive, which led him to launch a crowdfunding campaign for Jawbreakers earlier this year.
With that in mind, the series, which follows a group of ex-mercenary monster hunters, was marketed as a supposed return to form for the medium. Most of the controversy attached to the series came from its creators and their penchant for promoting right-leaning ideologies and conspiracy theories online. Nonetheless, once the Jawbreakers campaign was successfully funded, it found a publisher in Antarctic Press.
RELATED: The Obscure Reason There Are Now Two Doctor Stranges in the Marvel Universe
The deal between Meyer and Antarctic Press allegedly went south after Waid contacted the publisher by phone. The exact details of that phone call are currently unclear, but both Waid and the publisher have maintained that the conversation was civil and, despite rumors to the contrary, that Antarctic Press did not reach out to Marvel Comics (Waid is currently penning Marvel’s Doctor Strange series) in retaliation.
Presently, Waid has set his legal defense goal at $75,000. At the time of reporting, Waid’s campaign has accumulated a little under $8,000 in donations after having only been launched earlier today.

West Coast Avengers #4 Variant Introduces Guest Star… Jimmy Kimmel?
With the titular team of West Coast Avengers trying to make a name for themselves in Los Angeles as both superheroes and reality television stars, it seems the recently-formed outfit is set to make their very first talk show appearance.
RELATED: Hawkeye Explains Why Hawkeye Is The Perfect West Coast Avengers Leader
Marvel has now revealed artist David Nakayama’s variant cover for West Coast Avengers #4, which features Hawkeye (Clint Barton), Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Gwenpool, Quentin Quire and America Chavez alongside popular real-life late-night television host Jimmy Kimmel.
“We wanted the new West Coast Avengers to be able to debut to the rest of the Marvel Universe in a big, bombastic way,” said series editor Alanna Smith. “And what’s a better place for a team that’s courting the LA limelight to debut than Jimmy Kimmel Live? (Or, at least, the Marvel U equivalent!)”
“Thanks for letting our crazy kids crash your show!” West Coast Avengers writer Kelly Thompson added in a tweet to Jimmy Kimmel.
This variant cover is also a direct homage to that of 1984’s Avengers #239, the comic where Clint Barton actually made his very first late-night talk show appearance, appearing on Late Night with David Letterman alongside Black Widow, Beast, Wonder Man and Black Panther.

X-Force Artist Shares the Team’s New Costume Designs
With Marvel’s new X-Force series set to reunite the team’s original members this December, series artist Dylan Burnett has taken to Twitter to show off their new uniforms.
The images released by Burnett feature OG X-Force members Shatterstar, Domino, Cannonball and Warpath wearing their sleek new gear. The style of each member’s respective uniform has seemingly been customized to their liking, but all carry the same black, gray, white and orange color scheme, as well as the all-important “X” symbol. Kid Cable and Deathlok also sport their own versions of the new X-Force look.

— Dylan Burnett (@dylrburnett) October 16, 2018
Following the events of Extermination, which reunited the original X-Men team, X-Force will feature a reunion of its own, as the group’s inaugural members make it their mission to take down whoever is responsible for the murder of Cable. When their target ends up being a younger version of the person they are trying to avenge, however, things get complicated, resulting in the X-Force having to join forces with Kid Cable and Deathlok in order to clear their own names. Luckily for those two, they even got some new duds out of the deal.

The cover showcases the original five X-Men backed into a literal corner, illuminated by an optic blast from Cyclops. Art Adams’ cover for The Immortal Hulk #9 plays with a completely different era of the franchise, focusing on a team of X-Babies patterned off the Australian Outback era fighting the interdimensional villain Mojo.
Steve Epting’s cover for Black Panther #6 depicts the Astonishing X-Men from the Age of Apocalypse, one of the teams from the post-apocalyptic alternate reality that featured Quicksilver, Storm, Banshee, Dazzler, Iceman and Exodus. Salvador Larroca chose a different X-Men squad to showcase in his cover for Deadpool #6, highlighting the X-Treme X-Men from the turn of the century. Finally, the cover to X-23 #6 by Terry Dodson shows off a squad of X-Men from right before the “Schism “event that splintered the team into two factions.
Uncanny X-Men #1 is written by Kelly Thompson, Ed Brisson and Matthew Rosenberg, and illustrated by Mahmud Asrar, Mark Bagley and Mirko Colak. It is scheduled to be released on Nov. 14 from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s Hip-Hop Variant Covers To Be Used as Actual Album Art
In 2015, Marvel Comics debuted their hip-hop variant covers, which featured Marvel characters in redrawn versions of classic hip-hop album artwork. These variants will now be used as actual album artwork, as Marvel teams up with Urban Legends — the urban catalog platform of Universal Music Enterprises — to release new vinyl collector’s editions of the albums depicted.
“Marvel’s hip-hop variant covers celebrated the music industry in a whole new way, combing the creativity of the original album art and the Marvel UNiverse to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art,” Daniel Fink, Marvel Executive Director of Business Development, said in a statement. “We’re excited to collaborate with UMe to bring these variants back for fans of these iconic albums.”
RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Marvel’s New Hip-Hop Variants Homage 2Pac, RZA & More
The first three albums released in this series will be 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’, LL Cool J’s Mama Said Knock You Out and GZA’s Liquid Swords. The Marvel album artwork for Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was originally Brian Stelfreeze’s variant cover for The Invincible Iron Man #1 and features Iron Man taking 50 Cent’s place behind broken glass. Meanwhile, the artwork for Mama Said Knock You Out comes to us from Tim Bradstreet’s Punisher #1 variant and features Frank Castle recreating the LL Cool J’s pose from the original album cover. Finally, Denys Cowan, Bill Sienkiewicz and Chris Sotomayor’s artwork for Liquid Swords was first printed on the cover of Contest of Champions #1 and features Iron Man again, this time going toe-to-toe with Maestro.
“Marvel comics have always occupied a special place in the heart of hip-hop fans,” Universal Music Enterprises President/CEO Bruce Resnikoff said. “Both media continue to serve as a source of expression, escapism and inspiration for generations of super fans around the world.”

“There is an undeniable heroism that consistently runs through the veins of art forms,” Andre Torres, Head of Urban Legends, added. “And I’m excited to help weave these iconic narratives together in a way that celebrates their art and introduces new fans to their genius.”
The first three albums in this reissue series are set to be released on December 7 and are currently available for pre-order.

Jim Lee Armors the Dark Knight Up for New Batman: Damned Variant
DC Co-Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee has shared his variant cover for the upcoming second issue of Batman: Damned, which depicts a much more heavily armored version of the Dark Knight.
The DC Black Label miniseries, written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Lee Bermejo, features an out-of-continuity story where Batman discovers someone has killed the Joker resulting in the arrival of a supernatural threat to Gotham City.

Batman Damned variant cover issue 2 #batman #dccomics #penandink pic.twitter.com/8iumnLnvBu
— Jim Lee (@JimLee) October 23, 2018
The debut issue had Bruce Wayne run into the DC Universe’s resident occult ne’er-do-well John Constantine and ghostly Deadman as they attempted to investigate the mystery of the Joker’s murder along with the arrival of the paranormal to Gotham.
RELATED: Scott Snyder Surprised by Batman: Damned Controversy
December’s second issue promises to up the stakes on the supernatural elements of the story with Batman running into Etrigan the Demon, the Spectre, Enchantress, and more as the three-issue miniseries continues. Judging by Lee’s variant cover, the new armor worn by the Caped Crusader looks at least partially inspired by Etrigan’s own medieval design.
Batman: Damned #2 is written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Lee Bermejo. It is scheduled to be released on Dec. 5 by DC Comics.

Artgerm Debuts His First Ever Spider-Man Variant Cover
Popular digital artist Stanley “Artgerm” Lau has made his Marvel with his latest variant cover, this time providing a variant for January’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man relaunch.
The Singapore-based artist shared his variant cover through his Twitter account this past Friday showing Marvel’s flagship character swinging through New York City with a heart-shaped snap of his fingers.

Here comes my first Spidey appearance! FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #1 coming in January! #spiderman pic.twitter.com/AIrEJJl156
— Artgerm (@Artgerm) October 20, 2018
The new series was first announced at the beginning of the month with writer Tom Taylor reuniting with his artistic collaborators on All-New Wolverine, penciler Juann Cabal and colorist Nolan Woodard.
The variant cover marks Artgerm’s first ever variant cover featuring the amazing webslinger with the artist’s signature painted style. Artgerm had previously teased last week that he was working on a Spider-Man cover despite avoiding artwork of masked characters, taking particular inspiration from the recent Spider-Man video game on the PlayStation 4 though the final artwork ultimately differed from his initial teaser image.

Judging by the final variant cover, Artgerm has definitely done the Marvel superhero proud.
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 is written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Juann Cabal. It is scheduled to go on sale this January from Marvel Comics.

Star Wars Writer Chuck Wendig’s Twitter Appears to Have Been Targeted by Bots
Earlier this month, author Chuck Wendig was fired from Marvel Comics before he was able to complete the Star Wars: Shadow of Vader miniseries and another, yet-announced Star Wars project. The news came courtesy of Wendig’s Twitter account (he has since compiled his side of the story in a blog post, while Marvel has declined to comment), where the writer confirmed that he was fired due to the controversial content of his social media posts. Wendig said that Marvel considered his tweets too political, too vulgar and too negative.
RELATED: John Byrne Explains the Origins of His Potential X-Men Return
Essentially, by putting Wendig on one of its premier creative teams, Marvel opened itself to scrutiny due to the author’s lack of civility online, and people had seemingly noticed. However, a recent examination of Twitter bots that mentioned Wendig’s name around the time of his firing calls into question exactly how many people who saw and posted about the author were, in fact, people.
Updated data on Twitter before/after @ChuckWendig being fired from @Marvel/@StarWars. The new part is the number of bots (fully automated accounts) tweeting about Wendig. I'm amazed by how many bots there were. pic.twitter.com/SIfpYynvVx
— Bethany Lacina (@bethany_lacina) October 18, 2018
Bethany Lacina, an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Rochester, posted to Twitter on Thursday a graph showing bot activity referencing Wendig at three points: when Wendig first posted a long, vitriolic storm of tweets in response to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court; ComicsGate founder Ethan Van Sciver’s tweet linking to one of his YouTube videos about Wendig’s dissatisfaction; and Wendig’s announcement that he had been fired from Marvel.
RELATED: Doctor Strange Celebrates 400 Issues with a Joe Quesada Variant
The graph breaks down the bot activity across the three different events, comparing the chatter of bots, anonymous and puppet accounts. In this case, Lacina has defined “bots” as Twitter accounts that are fully automated, “anonymous” as accounts with no user description and “puppets” as accounts with more than 70 tweets per day. The graph reveals that the number of bot accounts posting about Wendig spiked after Van Sciver’s tweet and then spiked again after Wendig announced he had been fired. Another graph posted by Lacina reveals the number of normal and verified accounts mentioning Wendig during the specified timeframe.
Now all the types of Twitter stacked. I’ve said before that fully automated accounts were not that active on SW twitter (https://t.co/nysOhHBZWO). But 20% of the tweets in this period of Wendig twitter were from likely bots! (19% of accnts) cc: @Stephen_Kent89 @mortenbay pic.twitter.com/GHUm02kQMr
— Bethany Lacina (@bethany_lacina) October 18, 2018
Lacina then combined the data from the two graphs to reveal that roughly 20 percent of tweets about Wendig during the timeframe were bots, and that that 19 percent of the accounts posting were bots — none of which are real people eager to share genuine opinions. While it’s hard to draw any solid conclusions about the data, the various graphs reveal how easy it is for the tide of public conversation to be pulled one way or the other based on how many bot networks are at play on social media at any given time.

EXCLUSIVE: Amazing Spider-Man #8 Teases a New Crew of Villains
As if Spidey doesn’t have enough problems these days, Nick Spencer and Humberto Ramos are poised to introduce a new crew of NYC-based miscreants into the wall-crawler’s life.
In Amazing Spider-Man #8, the Thieves Guild of New York will make its debut, though what (or who) they’re after remains a bit unclear at the moment. And though the group doesn’t officially make their presence known in CBR’s exclusive preview of the issue, the introduction of a new character named Odessa Drake indicates she’s either the target of the Thieves Guild — or perhaps even their leader.

Greg Capullo Crafts a Chilling Cover for The Batman Who Laughs #1
After debuting in the DC Comics crossover event Dark Knights: Metal as its principal antagonist, The Batman Who Laughs is getting his own miniseries by co-creator Scott Snyder and artist Jock this December.
With less than two months until the debut of the six-issue miniseries, co-creator Greg Capullo has shared a variant cover for the upcoming title showing the villain in his creepy glory.

— Greg Capullo (@GregCapullo) October 18, 2018
The Bruce Wayne of an alternate Earth that was infected by a virulent strain of Joker toxin upon finally killing his foe, this incarnation of Batman brutally killed his allies and began to conquer the Dark Multiverse before setting his sights on Earth-1 of the DC Universe in the epic crossover.
The grinning villain was later revealed to be alive and imprisoned by Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom in pages of Justice League #8 with the Superman nemesis turning to alternate universe Batman to help him destroy the Justice League once and for all.
RELATED: DC Reveals the Name of Batman Who Laughs’ Bat-Punisher Sidekick
The solicit info from DC suggest the miniseries will see Batman of the DCU take on his evil doppelgänger in a battle for the Multiverse and, judging by Capullo’s cover, it may be the Dark Knight’s most chilling battle yet.
The Batman Who Laughs #1 is written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Jock. It is scheduled to go on sale on December 12 by DC Comics.

EXCLUSIVE: Return of Wolverine #2 Preview Deepens Persephone’s Mystery
The original solicitation text for Return of Wolverine #2 was frustratingly vague with regard to offering up further clues about Logan’s resurrection. And while CBR’s exclusive preview of the issue doesn’t really offer more in that regard, it does further illustrate the depravity of the series’ main villain, and new thorn in the entire X-Men team’s side, Persephone.
We already know she’s incredibly powerful, and her criminal empire (Soteira) seems poised to pretty much become the largest and most powerful the Marvel Universe has seen since Hydra. We also know she’s vicious enough to hire the likes of Omega Red to make Logan’s newfound life a living hell (perhaps even literally). But here, in a few short pages, Charles Soule and Declan Shalvey lay out just how downright evil and despicable Persephone truly is.

EXCLUSIVE: Aliens: Dust to Dust #3 Preview Teases a Terrifying Friendship
One question the Alien franchise has never satisfactorily answered is exactly how much of a Xenomorph’s host is passed on to the creature after it bursts live and wriggling from its victim. The films haven’t been shy about introducing new Xenomorphs, effectively establishing that they adapt biologically based on their hosts (be they docile dogs or ferocious Predators), but does anything else come over? Personality traits? Psychological quirks? Family ties, perhaps?
Aliens: Dust to Dust #3 might just provide an answer to that question — at least, that’s how it’s shaping up in an exclusive preview provided to CBR by Dark Horse Comics. The preview catches up with the series’ protagonist, Maxon, a nine-year-old boy who awoke one night to find that his home, an offworld colony administrated by the Weyland-Yutani corporation, was in the process of being overrun by Xenomorphs. Maxon’s mother died in short order, herself the victim of an alien facehugger.
RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Aliens Returns with ‘Extraordinarily Scary’ Dust to Dust
The final pages of Aliens: Dust to Dust #2 revealed that the Xenomorph that has burst from Maxon’s mother’s chest had survived a grisly explosion, though it lost an arm in the process. Maxon was the only person to glimpse the Xenomorph as it retreated from the wreckage, though he didn’t tell anyone what he had seen. Why?
The preview hints that Maxon might have some affection for the beast, which is effectively the last link he has left to his mother. The one-armed Xenomorph attacks one of Maxon’s rescuers after seemingly dispatching two other survivors. A later page reveals that Maxon survived his encounter with the monster that killed three people easily, which might indicate he was simply able to escape the creature… or that it had spared him.
