The Future Guardians of the Galaxy Includes the Unstoppable Juggerduck

The Future Guardians of the Galaxy Includes the Unstoppable Juggerduck

The Cosmic Ghost Rider quickly became a fan-favorite character when he made his debut in Thanos #13. Created by writer Donny Cates and artist Geoff Shaw, the identity of the future Herald of Galactus and Black Hand of Thanos remained a mystery, until he was revealed to be the former Punisher, Frank Castle.

Cosmic Ghost Rider’s popularity will result in his own limited series, from Cates and artist Dylan Burnett, where readers get to relive some of the key moments from Frank Castle’s transformation from vigilante to undead cosmic being. Marvel Comics’ solicitation for September’s Cosmic Ghost Rider #3 features one event that finds the Rider throwing down with the future Guardians of the Galaxy, with one of its members a cross between Juggernaut and Howard the Duck, affectionately called, Juggerduck.

RELATED: Cosmic Ghost Rider Variants Unleash Vengeance on Marvel Titles This Fall

Cates shared a Juggerduck character design from Burnett on Twitter, which is where we first discovered the name of this new mash-up character. As you can see above, Juggerduck has the physical size of the Unstoppable Juggernaut, with the beak and webbed feet of one Howard the Duck.

Moviegoers got a glimpse of Howard the Duck in a post-credits scene of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, where he was seen in the remains of the Collector’s stash of rare cosmic items. Other notable figures in the Future Guardians of the Galaxy include a Captain Marvel/Captain America (possibly Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ daughter, Danielle, who has starred as Captain America in an alternate future), a Rocket Raccoon/Groot hybrid, and the mutant time-traveler Cable.

Check out the cover and solicitation for Cosmic Ghost Rider #3, arriving in September from Marvel Comics.

Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner Explains Why the Terrifics’ Element Dog is a Pit Bull Terrier

Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner Explains Why the Terrifics’ Element Dog is a Pit Bull Terrier

DC Comics’ The Terrifics artist Evan “Doc” Shaner posted on Twitter Thursday, explaining his reasoning behind making the titular team’s Element Dog a pit bull terrier.

A dog with the powers of Terrifics member Metamorpho made his debut in this week’s The Terrifics #5, which had some fans wondering why the book’s artist chose the pit bull breed to represent Element Dog.

“I went with a pitbull because my brother had a pitbull and would talk about them needing some more positive representation,” Shaner tweeted.

RELATED: The Terrifics’ Headquarters Was Just Attacked by a DC Comics Nazi Artifact

This was in reference to the ongoing controversy of whether it’s OK to own a pit bull terrier, stemmed from a fear of biting and other injuries. In a piece for The Huffington Post, contributor Kathleen Gemmell talked at length about the controversy, ultimately with a conclusion that “all breeds can and do attack as they are the domestication of select breeding of the wolf.”

But also, Shaner said he just thought about what Rex (Metamorpho) would look like if he was actually a dog.

“Also just seemed like a good ‘If Rex were a dog what kind of dog would he be?’ answer,” he tweeted.

Fans replied to his tweet with thank you messages and photos of their own pit bull terriers sporting everything from Superman’s iconic suit to some yellow sunglasses.

DC Pays Tribute to Harlan Ellison: ‘Talented, Polarizing, Yet Always Entertaining’

DC Pays Tribute to Harlan Ellison: ‘Talented, Polarizing, Yet Always Entertaining’

DC Entertainment has issued a press release mourning the loss of iconic writer Harlan Ellison, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 84.

Calling Ellison a “prolific and influential writer, known as well for his incredible storytelling as he was for his outspoken personality,” DC lamented the writer’s passing. “Talented, polarizing, yet always entertaining, Harlan Ellison leaves an incredible storytelling legacy. He will be sorely missed.”

The release also goes on to acknowledge how much Ellison accomplished with DC:

“Ellison’s comic book resume also includes creating stories for DC, due in part to his longtime relationship with DC editor Julius Schwartz. His most recently published story was 2014’s ‘Batman ’66: The Lost Episode.’ This one-shot was based on his story outline for the 60’s Batman TV show that would have introduced Two-Face to the Caped Crusader’s television Rogues Gallery. The story outline was adapted to comic book form by DC legends Len Wein and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. Additional DC works include his 2013 graphic novel ‘Harlan Ellison’s 7 Against Chaos,’ with Paul Chadwick and Ken Steacy, plus several scripts for Detective Comics.”

Ellison was the recipient of multiple Edgar, Nebula and Hugo awards throughout his life. In addition to his work for DC Comics, he wrote for The Twilight Zone, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Outer Limits and Babylon 5. He is perhaps best known for the Star Trek episode “The City on the Edge of Forever,” which won him the Hugo and Writers Guild of America awards.

Marvel Reveals Spider-Geddon Creative Team, Teases Multiple Deaths

Marvel Reveals Spider-Geddon Creative Team, Teases Multiple Deaths

Marvel Comics today revealed the creative team behind the upcoming Spider-Geddon event. The event, which once again brings together the many Spider-Characters of the Spider-Verse, will bridge from Dan Slott’s Spider-Man #800 and be helmed by Christos Gage and artist Jorge Molina.

The event’s story will be a direct follow-up to the events of Spider-Verse, which assembled Spider-Characters from across multiple realities to fight the Inheritors, creatures that feed on Totems, hybrid beings that connect both the animal and human kingdoms.

The events of Spider-Verse saw a multitude of Spider-Characters slain at the hands of the Inheritors, who were finally imprisoned, seemingly for good — or not. It sounds like history may repeat itself when the Inheritors get free during the course of Spider-Geddon.

RELATED: Dan Slott Says Goodbye to Spider-Man, But He’s Gonna Go Down Swinging

Spider-Verse took the multitudes of Spider-Characters and put them all on the same stage and we’ve been playing with it ever since,” Editor Nick Lowe said in a press release. “Spider-Geddon straps dynamite to that stage and blows it to smithereens. The most dangerous spider-villain ever, Morlun, and his family of Inheritors were trapped in the perfect prison at the end of Spider-Verse. But like in any super hero story, there’s always a way out and you won’t believe how these Spider-Eaters get out. But they’re out and they want revenge.”

Like Spider-Verse, the Spider-Geddon event will have its fair share of surprising Spider-Character cameos, including an appearance from the Spider-Man featured in Insomniac Games’ upcoming open world action-adventure video game. More Spider-Character appearances were revealed in teaser art released earlier this month, and it sounds like one more yet-to-be-revealed character Gage has worked on before could be the savior of the Spider-Verse… or its destroyer.

RELATED: Who Is Spidergeddon’s Mystery Spider-Man? We Have Some Theories

“Having had the great pleasure of collaborating with Dan Slott and an all-star array of artists on Spider-Verse, I’m thrilled to be part of Spider-Geddon!” Gage said. “In addition to old favorites, Spider-Geddon will see some new parallel-world Spideys show up… notably the Peter Parker from the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man, the PlayStation 4 video game I’ve been working on for the past several years with the great folks at Insomniac Games! Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention how excited I am about once again writing REDACTED, the REDACTED! Is he the hero Spider-Geddon needs… or the biggest threat to our world? Comics should be fun, thrilling, and a little scary. With Spider-Geddon, we’re looking to deliver on all counts.”

Spider-Geddon #0 by Christos Gage and Jorge Molina hits comic book shop shelves on Sept. 26.

Doomsday Clock: Johns Reveals Whether Killer Frost is Lying About the Superman Theory

Doomsday Clock: Johns Reveals Whether Killer Frost is Lying About the Superman Theory

At the heart of DC’s Doomsday Clock event, there is a worldwide wave of distrust in the world’s superheroes that stems from something called the Superman Theory. While much of this theory is still mysterious to us, we do know that it’s influence is quite clear: metahumans are no longer trusted. In fact, some of them are outright hunted down by the general public — to the point that Black Adam, of all people, has offered sanctuary to all the world’s supers.

The Superman Theory gained traction as a conspiracy theory that stipulated most of the world’s metahumans, who just so happened to be Americans, were actually created by the US government as super soldiers, and that the extensive stories that surround them were nothing more than elaborate narratives to keep their true purpose a mystery. Leaked documents and reports have “supported” these claims, and a witness testimony coming from Killer Frost claimed that it was all true — that, for example, Firestorm was created by the government.

RELATED: DC Solicits Tease the ‘Truth’ About Doctor Manhattan’s Role in Rebirth

But the truth of the matter is that we, the readers, know this isn’t true. So what is Killer Frost up to? Were we lied to all along, or is she the one who’s lying? Well, the writer behind the comic series, Geoff Johns, finally sets the record straight.

Speaking with Newsweek, the scribe revealed that Killer Frost is, indeed, lying. “You’ve got this moment where Killer Frost, who after Firestorm says, “Hey I’m not one of them,” and Killer Frost says, “Oh he totally is. This one is, this one is, I am, you can’t trust any of us.” Well, who knows if she’s telling the truth or just stirring stuff up? And spoiler alert, she’s totally lying, but she’s doing it just because she is trying to screw over Firestorm and other people.”

According to Johns, the mystery of the conspiracy theory is far from over. Worse still, it’s meant to reflect the current political climate. “The Superman Theory is supposed to be something that is creating this world tension, reflecting some of how misinformation can actually get very, very dangerous in our world, and in this case, even more so,” the writer says. “There is an element of truth to it and that truth is going to be uncovered, and who is behind it and why and what it was designed to do and what’s happening, will play a major part in the story.”

Doomsday Clock’s Backmatter Holds Important Clues About the DCU’s Future

Doomsday Clock’s Backmatter Holds Important Clues About the DCU’s Future

The back-up material at the end of each issue of Doomsday Clock contains more than just world-building Easter eggs.

Like the original Watchmen comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, every issue of the crossover Doomsday Clock contains in-universe supplemental material. These world-building extras include everything from news stories to case files to hand-written notes about different facets of the DC Universe, including the series’ central mystery surrounding the Superman Theory. Writer Geoff Johns confirms that backmatter actually teases future developments.

RELATED: Doomsday Clock’s Rorschach Origin Has a Twist Even Rorschach Is Unaware Of

“The story is set slightly future in the DC Universe from now. The reality is some people read the issue and they don’t go into the back, and I hope they read the backmatter,” he told Newsweek. “It’s more grounded and inward and for DC fans, if they look closely they will find new ideas and characters that they are going to see come to light.”

This lines up with previous comments from Johns revealing that Doomsday Clock takes place approximately one year into the future of the current DCU. Johns noted that DC’s current publishing schedule will catch up to the events of Doomsday Clock by the time the final issue of the series is released next year. Supporting this, eagle-eyed readers have noticed that much of the back-up material running at the end of every issue of the series is actually dated one year ahead.

RELATED: DC Solicits Tease the ‘Truth’ About Doctor Manhattan’s Role in Rebirth

With Doomsday Clock nearing its halfway point, it will be interesting to see what the state of the DC Universe is in a year’s time.

Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Gary Frank and Brad Anderson, Doomsday Clock #6 arrives July 18 from DC.

Doomsday Clock’s Rorschach Origin Has a Twist Even Rorschach Is Unaware Of

The origin of DC’s new Rorschach is apparently as much a mystery to the character as it is to readers.

The critically acclaimed Watchmen/DC Universe crossover Doomsday Clock has brought many mysteries involving both continuities to light, but one of the biggests is the origin of the new Rorschach. Writer Geoff Johns has teased that Reggie Long has a huge twist in his backstory that even the character himself is unaware of.

RELATED: DC Solicits Tease the ‘Truth’ About Doctor Manhattan’s Role in Rebirth

“Even though though we had his origin, we learn more about Reggie and how and why he became Rorschach. There’s a whole other side to it that we will be revealing in the book that we have not revealed yet, that he’s not even aware of,” Johns told Newsweek. “If you read Doomsday Clock #4 closely, and you’ve read Watchmen, there are some misperceptions that Reggie has about Rorschach.”

Introduced in Doomsday Clock #1, Reggie is the son of criminal psychologist Dr. Malcom Long who up the superhero mantle after the death of original Rorschach Walter Kovacs in Alan Moor and Dave Gibbons’ seminal Watchmen. Dr. Long had been Kovacs’ psychologist after the hero’s brief incarceration and notes from his sessions with the original Rorschach influenced Reggie to follow in the vigilante’s footsteps after his father’s death.

RELATED: Doomsday Clock #5, Annotated Part 1 – Death of Superman, JSA & More

In Doomsday Clock #4, which provided the initial backstory of the new Rorschach, former superhero Byron Lewis (Mothman) gave Reggie some his father’s notes on Kovacs which evidently do not contain the full scope of Dr. Malcolm Long’s connection to the Watchmen character.

“If you know how Rorschach affected Reggie’s father, Reggie doesn’t exactly know the truth behind the whole story. And again, it’s levels of missing information and lies and truths that we will be dealing with,” Johns confirmed, promising that Reggie’s story will become “clearer and clearer” as the series progresses.

Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Gary Frank and Brad Anderson, Doomsday Clock #6 arrives July 18 from DC.

Robin Will Have a New Secret Mentor in Teen Titans

Robin Will Have a New Secret Mentor in Teen Titans

Writer Adam Glass and artist Bernard Chang will begin their run as the new Teen Titans creative team with Issue #20, as the events of Justice League: No Justice begin to impact the title. Along with a new creative team, Teen Titans will also have “new blood, new mission, new attitude,” as familiar faces like Robin, Kid Flash and Red Arrow will be joined by newcomers Djinn, Roundhouse and Crush, the illegitimate daughter of Lobo.

Part of the change in direction for Teen Titans will also include a new, secret mentor for Damian Wayne, according to DC Comics’ September 2018 solicitations. The young hero will begin to question the Justice League’s methods following the events of No Justice, which took Robin to the alien planet of Colu to try and stop giant Omega Titans from devouring the world. Unfortunately, the combined efforts of the heroes and villains assembled were not enough to save the planet. Could this lead to Robin’s change in attitude?

RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Teen Titans #20 Starts a New Era with a New Lineup

As for who Damian’s new mentor could be, there are a few options. Robin’s mother, Talia al Ghul, never seems to miss an opportunity to remind her son of his questionable background as a child raised to be a ruthless killing machine. Ra’s al Ghul, Damian’s grandfather and Talia’s father, recently visited Damian in Batman: Prelude to the Wedding – Robin vs. Ra’s al Ghul, with the villain using drugs to manipulate Damian into believing he had a brother. Of course, the third option for a mentor could be someone we’re not even considering, and would come as a shock not only to us, but to the reader as well.

Below you can find the cover and solicitation text for Teen Titans #22, with an on-sale date of September 19.

There’s also plenty of drama to go around, as Kid Flash mulls quitting after his clash with Red Arrow, and Damian’s harboring a new, secret mentor, all while his secret prison’s about to blow up in his face.

Wonder Woman Bursts Into Action in Jim Lee Variant Cover

Wonder Woman Bursts Into Action in Jim Lee Variant Cover

Jim Lee has unveiled a new variant cover for an upcoming issue of Justice League, this time spotlighting Wonder Woman.

After drawing a Hawkgirl cover for Justice League #3, Lee has turned his attention to the Amazonian princess for his latest variant, which depicts Diana wielding a sword and shield as she charges into battle.

Arriving next month, the issue teases dark secrets from the histories of The Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter coming to light for the first time. As the other members of DC’s premier team rallies to save their teammates, humanity turns to the Legion of Doom for salvation as the multiverse begins to unravel.

Relaunched earlier this month by writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Cheung, the new Justice League and its lead-in miniseries Justice League: No Justice has explored the fallout from the finale of Dark Nights: Metal, in which the Justice League shattered the Source Wall surrounding the DC Universe. With the wall breached, the multiverse stands at a risk of extinction from threats far beyond the explored universe.

However, even with these new threats, Wonder Woman doesn’t looking to be backing down anytime soon.

Justice League #4, written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Jorge Jimenez and Alejandro Sanchez, is on sale on July 18 from DC.

Marvel Will Be ‘Less Cagey’ About Its Plans After Avengers 4

Marvel Will Be ‘Less Cagey’ About Its Plans After Avengers 4

Although Marvel Studios has revealed relatively few details about its plans for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that will change next year with the release of Avengers 4.

At a weekend press event for Ant-Man and The Wasp, President Kevin Feige referred to a number of ideas that marketing department has for the unveiling the upcoming film slate, but specified it would not be until after Avengers 4 that the studio will be able to be “less cagey about it.”

RELATED: Spider-Man 2 Title Confirmed By Marvel’s Kevin Feige

For now, Feige insisted Marvel is just taking things one film at a time. He noted, “Between Captain Marvel finishing in two weeks, Spider-Man starting in two weeks, Avengers 4 post getting under way right now, releasing this movie… That’s keeping us busy over the next year.”

It’s important to note that Feige pointedly would not confirm any specific characters that would be used for future films, so anyone hoping for news about a Black Widow movie will be disappointed. He spoke of the enormous possibilities, character-wise, for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying, “There are a lot of potential characters that are among that list.”

RELATED: First Captain Marvel Trailer Should Arrive in ‘a Few Months,’ Says Kevin Feige

However, it’s interesting to note that Feige gave a vague idea of where fans should look to for the future of the MCU, pointing out that, “The plan going forward is gonna be about making great film, as good a film as we can, one after another. How they connect, how they build up, it all goes back to the comics. Comics has done a good job. Infinity War was just one mega-event in the comics in the history of mega-events. So, who knows.”

In other words, it seems like Feige is suggesting that Marvel Studios will continue to mine the source material in terms of the many comic book mega-events that could still be adapted, like “The Kree/Skrull War,” “The Korvac Saga” and “Secret Invasion.” Things would, of course, be a whole lot wider in terms of available material if the Fox/Disney deal were to go through and Marvel Studios would have access to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, especially the cosmic storylines that would be available once they had access to the villains related to the Fantastic Four like Galactus, Annihilus and Kang. Possible storylines for the future movies could be “The Coming of Galactus,” Avengers Forever and the Annihilation crossover event.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers 4 arrives May 3, 2019.

Ewan McGregor Rumored to Return As Obi-Wan in Star Wars: Episode IX

Ewan McGregor Rumored to Return As Obi-Wan in Star Wars: Episode IX

Rumors have circulated for years that Ewan McGregor would reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Star Wars spinoff, with little sign of actual movement. Now, following an apparent debunking of a report that Lucasfilm has placed its anthology films on hold, comes rumors that the Jedi Master may not only be destined for a series on Disney’s new streaming service but also a role in Episode IX.

According to the U.K. newspaper The Sun, McGregor will “secretly film for the next Star Wars movie.” If true, that wouldn’t be the first time the actor has worked on the current Star Wars trilogy, as he lent his voice to the sequence in Star Wars: The Force Awakens in which Rey has a Force vision.

RELATED: Star Wars: Obi-Wan Spinoff Rumored to be Eyed for Disney Streaming Service

These reports are purely rumors at this point, but it’s interesting to note that the same sources The Sun cites also note that “Disney have been mulling over a stand-alone film for Obi-Wan. There have been concerns about getting the story right.”

While you would expect that McGregor’s role would be a fairly minor one, as a Jedi Ghost, it’s important to point out that Yoda’s appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi was also as “just” a Jedi Ghost and yet was key to the final act. It wouldn’t be out of the question to expect Obi-Wan’s presence in Episode IX to have a similar impact.

RELATED: Ewan McGregor to Star in The Shining Sequel Doctor Sleep

Not only that, but it might be important that the same unnamed “Los Angeles sources” cited by The Sun to establish that McGregor will be in the film also made a point to mention that Disney has been considering a stand-alone film for the character, so long as the story is right. There is a real possibility, then, that Obi-Wan’s role in this film might be designed to set up a new movie. Perhaps he will make reference to some event that took place before A New Hope that the spinoff could address.

The confusing aspect of these rumors is that with Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo dead and Leia presumably written out of the story as well, the only character left in the series who have any connection to Obi-Wan Kenobi would be Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3P0. Unless, of course, the “truth” about Rey’s parentage wasn’t completely addressed in The Last Jedi, and she does have some sort of familial relationship to Obi-Wan.

We will know for sure when Episode IX is released in December 2019.

Jim Lee Reunites Batman & Hush for New ‘Recut’ Collection Cover

Jim Lee Reunites Batman & Hush for New ‘Recut’ Collection Cover

DC will release new edition of the popular Batman story Hush storyline this fall, with a new cover by original artist Jim Lee.

Lee, DC Entertainment’s new chief creative officer, shared a first look Thursday evening at his penciled cover for the September re-release of Batman: Hush Unwrapped.

RELATED: Joker and Catwoman Share Their Very Own Killing Joke Moment

The Unwrapped editions highlight the original pencil artwork of classic DC stories in black and white. Previous editions include Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman: The Court of Owls, Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis’ Blackest Night, and Grant Morrison and Tony Daniel’s Batman R.I.P.

Batman: Hush, by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee, was previously collected in 2011 in the Unwrapped format. The 2002-2003 storyline, which spanned Batman #608-618, followed Bruce Wayne as he investigated a mysterious bandaged figure who was organizing Batman rogues’ gallery against him. An immediate critical and commercial success, the influential storyline established the modern romance between Batman and Catwoman, which culminates next month in their wedding in Batman #50, and led to the reintroduction of Jason Todd, as Red Hood.

A bestselling artist and a co-founder of Image Comics, in 2010 Lee was named co-publisher of DC alongside Dan DiDio. He added chief creative officer of DC Entertainment to his resume last week when he succeed Geoff Johns in the role.

DC Comics Brings 100-Page Giants Back To Life This Summer

DC Comics Brings 100-Page Giants Back To Life This Summer

This summer, DC Comics will extend its reach beyond local comic book stores to the very last place readers would expect (at least in this day and age): Wal-Mart.

Beginning in July, at more than 3,000 participating Wal-Mart stores across the nation, readers will be able to pick up four “giant” monthly comics, from such acclaimed storytellers as Tom King, Brian Michael Bendis, Jimmy Palmiottii, Amanda Conner, Dan Jurgens and Tim Seeley.

RELATED: The Latest Chapter of Marvel/DC’s Unofficial Crossover Just Happened

Priced at $4.99 and clocking in at 100 pages in length, these titles will include Superman Giant, Justice League of America GiantBatman Giant and Teen Titans Giant. Then, starting in August, Superman and JLA will begin arriving in select Wal-Mart locations on a monthly basis, with Batman and Teen Titans following suit two weeks later.

“We are extraordinarily excited about working with Walmart to expand the reach of our books,” DC Publisher Dan DiDio said in a statement. “These new monthly books combine new and accessible stories with reprints of classic comic series. It’s a great way for new readers to get into comics and follow the characters they’ve grown to love in TV and film.”

Here are DC’s official descriptions for the upcoming titles:

SUPERMAN GIANT #1

SUPERMAN GIANT #1 features chapter one of the two-part “Endurance,” an original story written by Jimmy Palmiotti (HARLEY QUINN, ACTION COMICS) with art by Tom Derenick (HARLEY QUINN, CYBORG, BATMAN/SUPERMAN). The Daily Planet sends Clark Kent to Tornado Alley to do a story on the area, but when the storm hits, it turns out that this mild-mannered reporter is more helpful as Superman.

The issue also includes:

THE TERRIFICS #1 (2018) – From this year’s New Age of Heroes and born of the events of DC’s hit series DARK NIGHTS: METAL. Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Plastic Man and Phantom Girl are a team of heroes bound together by fate and united by the spirit of exploration and discovery. Together these heroes plumb the depths of the fantastic to learn what it means to become family.

GREEN LANTERN #1 (2005) – Written by best-selling writer Geoff Johns with art by Ethan Van Sciver and Carlos Pacheco, this first chapter launches the fan-favorite three-part story “No Fear,” in which Hal Jordan makes his return to the DC Universe as the Green Lantern, casting the light of justice on the darkest corners of Space Sector 2814.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN #1 (2003) – The iconic fan-favorite story arc, “Public Enemies,” returns, courtesy of writer Jeph Loeb, with artists Ed McGuinness and Tim Sale. Batman and Superman unite when President Lex Luthor accuses the Man of Steel of a crime against humanity and assembles a top-secret team of powerhouse heroes to bring Superman in by any means necessary.

September’s SUPERMAN GIANT #3 features Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King’s first return to the Man of Steel since his poignant and heartfelt tribute story, “For Tomorrow,” in the pages of ACTION COMICS #1000. Together with DC Master Class artist Andy Kubert, this powerhouse team will take readers on a new 12-part adventure titled “Up in the Sky!” When a little girl is kidnapped and taken from Earth, Superman embarks on a galaxy-spanning mission to find the perpetrators…but has to decide what lengths he will go to in order to save one life!

TEEN TITANS GIANT #1

In this original six-part Teen Titans story by Dan Jurgens with art by Scot Eaton, Wayne Faucher and Jim Charalampidis, the Teen Titans’ pizza dinner is interrupted by the introduction of a new villain, the Disruptor. Teaming up with the Fearsome Five and working as an agent of H.I.V.E., he had one mission: kill the Teen Titans! The battle spills onto the streets of San Francisco, putting its citizens at risk, while H.I.V.E. uses this distraction to begin their plan for world conquest!

Additional issue #1 stories include:

SUPER SONS #1 (2017) – From DC’s smash-hit Rebirth event, writer Peter J. Tomasi and artist Jorge Jimenez reintroduce the sons of Superman and Batman, Jonathan Kent and Damian Wayne, in part one of “When I Grow Up.” As Robin, Damian’s more than ready to take his place at the heroes’ table and has zero plans to wait his turn. And he’s dragging Superman’s son along for the trip, whether Jon likes it or not!

SIDEWAYS #1 (2018) – Also from the New Age of Heroes, this story written by Dan DiDio with art by Kenneth Rocafort introduces fans to high schooler Derek James who, during the events of DARK NIGHTS: METAL, has acquired powers from the Dark Multiverse and stepped into the role of superhero! But when cracks begin to appear in the space-time continuum, he soon learns that with that much power comes even greater liability!

TEEN TITANS #1 (2003) – Written by best-selling author Geoff Johns with art by Mike McKone. Cyborg, Raven, Starfire and Beast Boy welcome in a new roster of young heroes to train to defend humanity—Wonder Girl, Impulse and a Superboy who’s been cloned from Superman’s DNA!

BATMAN GIANT #1

Batman is on the case of a missing girl in “One More Chance,” an all-new story by writer Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Patrick “Patch” Zircher. Batman is the world’s greatest detective, but what happens when the trail in his newest case leads him back to a place from his past that he never expected to revisit?

BATMAN GIANT #1 also includes:

BATMAN #608 (2002) – Written by Jeph Loeb with art by comics icon Jim Lee, issue #608 kicks off “Batman: Hush,” one of the most popular storylines in the Dark Knight’s fabled history. When Batman sets out to unmask the mystery character wreaking havoc in his life, he teams up with an unexpected ally (Catwoman) and finds himself facing off against not only his deadliest foes, but some of the toughest characters in the DC Universe, including Poison Ivy, Killer Croc and even Superman!

NIGHTWING #1 (2011) – From DC’s New 52, this story by writer Kyle Higgins and artist Eddy Barrows debuted a new look for Dick Grayson as he dives into a tale of murder, mystery and superhuman evil against the backdrop of Haley’s Circus, the place that started him on his path from acrobat to orphan to sidekick and ultimately superhero!

HARLEY QUINN #1 (2011) – Also from the New 52, writer Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Amanda Conner break Harley Quinn out of The Joker’s shadow with all the force of a giant mallet!

Beginning with BATMAN GIANT #3 in September, superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis makes his DC debut on the Dark Knight with a 12-part story, “Universe.” Batman’s run-in with the Riddler leads the Caped Crusader into a mystery that spans the globe!

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA GIANT #1

Justice League member Wonder Woman is spotlighted in “The Conversion,” an all-new story from NIGHTWING writer Tim Seeley and artists Rick Leonardi and Steve Buccellato. In this single-issue story, Wonder Woman comes face to face with Ares, god of war—who sees her as a promising new recruit!

JUSTICE LEAGUE GIANT #1 also includes:

JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 (2011) – From the incomparable team of writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee comes this version of the League from the New 52. In this alternative spin on the union of Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg, superheroes are a strange and new phenomenon. The mysterious Batman discovers a dark evil that requires him to unite these reluctant heroes to protect Earth from a cosmic-level threat!

THE FLASH #1 (2011) – In this New 52 version of the Fastest Man Alive, writer Brian Buccellato and artist Francis Manapul introduce Barry Allen to a villain who not only can be everywhere at once, but is also a close friend of the Scarlet Speedster!

AQUAMAN #1 (2011) – Award-winning writer Geoff Johns and dynamic artist Ivan Reis team up on this story from the New 52! Aquaman has given up the throne of Atlantis, but the sea still has plans for Arthur Curry as a broken race of undersea creatures, the Trench, emerges from the ocean depths, bent on destroying the surface world!

In issue #2, Seeley teams up with artists Felipe Watanabe and Chris Sotomayor on “Mother’s Day,” a stand-alone story where Wonder Woman returns to Paradise Island for the first time since her exile, only to find that the Amazons – and Queen Hippolyta – have been abducted by Echidna, the mythological Mother of Monsters, with a brood of unstoppable beasts as children!

Issue #3 begins another original 12-part Wonder Woman story by HARLEY QUINN co-writers Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti called “Come Back to Me.” When Steve Trevor’s plane crashes on an island outside of time itself, it’s up to Wonder Woman to rescue him from this mysterious land, full of monsters, dinosaurs and some very surprising citizens.

DC’s Black Label Release of Batman: White Knight Will Not Be Uncensored After All

DC’s Black Label Release of Batman: White Knight Will Not Be Uncensored After All

In an amusing case of taking a circuitous route to get to the original destination, writer/artist Sean Gordon Murphy reveals he was mistaken when he announced last week that the Black Label reprint of Batman: White Knight would include an uncensored sex scene between the Joker and Harley Quinn.

Initial indications were that the Batman: White Knight trade colleciton would contain the version of the scene that appeared originally in both print and digital, in which Harley Quinn’s nudity following a love scene was covered with word balloons. Murphy had earlier released the original, unedited version (colored by Matt Hollingsworth) on his Instagram, but it seemed as though the scene was destined to be printed in the trade in its edited form. However, after he announced the series would be published under DC’s new prestige line Black Label, Murphy let fans know the unedited scene would be in the collection.

RELATED: Sean Murphy’s Batman: White Knight Joins DC’s Black Label

As it turns out, though, Murphy was mistaken; the collection will be rated Teen + and not Adult.

The sex scene was a major moment in Murphy’s series, which told the story of the Joker turning sane and becoming the “White Knight” of Gotham City. It’s the first time that Joker (called Jack Napier in the story) and Harley had ever been depicted as being intimate in a comic book story. With the series taking part in DC’s Black Label, it seemed as though Murphy would get the chance to do, in effect, the R-rated version of the story he’d intended. He noted at the time, “This is the much-talked-about love scene with Jack and Harley in White Knight. I’ve been told to cover up the nudity with word balloons, to meet DC’s ‘teen+’ rating. Which I understand. I was pushing for an ‘adult’ rating, but I don’t know if DC has that. Maybe for the sequel I can convince them.”

RELATED: White Knight Characters Reimagined In Style of ’90s Batman: TAS

However, despite the scene not appearing unedited in the initial Black Label collection, Murphy did let fans know there would be an unedited version of the story released eventually.

It is unclear when the other version will be released, as the Black Label collection isn’t due out until October 9, 2018, so it will likely not be until at least 2019 that we will get to see the version of Batman: White Knight that Murphy intended for fans to read.

Stephen King’s Dark Tower Comics Leave Marvel For Another Publisher

Stephen King’s Dark Tower Comics Leave Marvel For Another Publisher

After more than a decade at Marvel, Stephen King’s Dark Tower comic book are moving to Simon & Schuster’s graphic novel division, Gallery 13.

King’s novels have been published by Simon & Schuster since 1995, and just three years ago, the company acquired the rights to most of his earlier works. At the time, King noted, “It’s a no-brainer, really. Good publishing and good relationships equals happy writers and long shelf life. I know from experience that this group of people—at Scribner, at Pocket, at Simon & Schuster Audio, and throughout the company—values the work I do, and wants to find as many readers as possible for the books I write, both now and in the future. Trusting them with this large body of work is my pleasure. We are excellent allies and good friends.” Therefore, it is not surprising that he would move his Dark Tower comics there when he had the chance.

RELATED: Dark Tower TV Series Could Actually Begin Filming This Summer

Sure enough, King noted, “I’m delighted to see my stories in this exciting format, where they can reach new readers.”

The Dark Tower fantasy epic began in 1982 and spanned seven novels before ending in 2004. The adventures of gunslinger Roland Deschain throughout a series of parallel worlds was turned into a film in 2017 starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, and is rumored to be adapted once more for television.

At Marvel, there were two separate projects as part of a Dark Tower deal with King. The company released a series of prequel comic books written by Peter David and Stephen King research assistant (and Dark Tower expert) Robin Furth, with art by Jae Lee and Richard Isanove. The first book in the series was called The Gunslinger Born.

There were a total of five miniseries detailing Roland’s early years. Marvel then adapted the Dark Tower novels themselves in a series of six books, each written by David and Kurth and drawn by Isanove.

RELATED: Idris Elba Knows As Much About the Dark Tower TV Series As You Do

One of the first Gallery 13 projects was a re-release of the 1982 Stephen King and Bernie Wrighton adaptation of Creepshow, so the imprint clearly make sense as a home for these Dark Tower stories.

Gallery 13 will release the first one of the prequel series (now officially titled Dark Tower: Beginnings) on Aug. 14 Each graphic novel will cost $24.99. They will release a new book every two weeks. The official graphic novel adaptation of Dark Tower will then begin to be released in spring 2019.

According to CNN, when viewers binge the 1980s-set sci-fi horror series, they also binge on Eggo waffles, the favored food of the show’s breakout character Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown.

Eggo sales had been declining in recent years, but when the nostalgia-driven Netflix series debuted in July 2016, it really connected with both TV viewers and, apparently, waffle consumers. Kellogg’s saw a surprising surge in Eggo sales once the series debuted. Eleven’s love for Eggo Waffles was a key plot point in the series, in which she was raised in a laboratory, where scientists developed her telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Cut off from the outside world, when she escaped, she quickly grew fond of Eggos and even used her powers to steal a bunch of boxes of the frozen breakfast food. Later, Chief Hopper left waffles for Eleven in the woods.

Kellogg’s chief executive Steven Cahillane explained the importance of Eggos appearing on the series, saying, “When Eggo waffles became a fixture on the hit show Stranger Things, we quickly leveraged the [resulting] consumer engagement. It sparked conversations. And it prompted consumers to reconsider a long-established brand in new and very contemporary ways.”

During the 2017 Super Bowl ad to promote Stranger Things Season 2, the series used a classic Eggos TV commercial.

Kellogg’s was prepared for Season 2, releasing a number of social media tie-ins with the show’s return to Netflix in October 2017, including special recipes for each episode.

The resulting interest from fans led to the largest number of mentions that Eggo had ever received on social media. Sales went up a shocking 14 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017 and were up 9.4 percent in the first four months of 2018. However, as the buzz about Stranger Things Season 2 passes and most everyone who was going to watch it has done so, the sales have trickled down, and for May 2018, they were only 1.4 percent higher than the same month in 2017.

With Season 3 of Stranger Things beginning production, you better believe Eggo is coming up with ways to tie-in with the new episodes. There is no way Kellogg’s is going to “leggo” of this marketing opportunity.

Nick Fury Battles Krakoa in Marvel’s Journey Into Mystery One-Shot

Nick Fury Battles Krakoa in Marvel’s Journey Into Mystery One-Shot

A decades-old secret steeped in Marvel history will be told for the first time in September.

In the one-shot special Journey Into Mystery: The Birth of Krakoa, by writer Dennis Hopeless (Jean Grey) and artist Djibril Morissette-Phan (All-New Wolverine), Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos embark on one final top-secret mission in the closing days of World War II.

Set years before Fury became the Marvel Universe’s leading super-spy, the story follows the elite commando squad on a mission that leads them to cross paths with the living island Krakoa.

“Krakoa is a classic X-Men fixture — from its first appearance in Giant Size X-Men #1 to revelations about its true nature in X-Men: Deadly Genesis decades later, ‘the Island that Walks Like a Man’ has fascinated generations of readers … but we’ve never known the story of how it came to be — until now!” editor Annalise Bissa said in a statement. “In this story, we fill in some of the history of Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandos as well. Their story drops off late in WWII and we don’t see the Howlies again until they’re reunited during the Korean War, after several years of civilian life. So…what did they do at the end of the War? And how does it intersect with the atomic origins of Krakoa?”

Introduced in 1975 in Giant Size X-Men #1, by writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum, Krakoa was presented initially as mutant in the form of an island that captured most of the classic X-Men team. To rescue his teammates, Cyclops recruited an all-new, all-different squad to venture to the mutant island, a creature borne from nuclear weapons testing. With atomic weapons playing such a pivotal role in the final days of World War II, the one-shot special will show how Fury and the Howling Commandos figure exactly into Krakoa’s origins.

Journey Into Mystery: The Birth of Krakoa will be released Sept. 12 by Marvel.

Jean Grey Joins Forces with a Fan-Favorite X-Men Team in Extermination

Jean Grey Joins Forces with a Fan-Favorite X-Men Team in Extermination

With Ahab continuing to hunt Charles Xavier’s original, younger X-Men through the timestream, every X-Men team in existence is called to arms in Extermination #3. And as Marvel’s solicitation for the September issue reveals, young Jean Grey will call upon a classic team from the ’90s to act as her personal bodyguards.

The Mark Brooks cover for Extermination #3 features Jean Grey charging into battle alongside Cannonball, Domino, Boom Boom, Warpath and Shatterstar, better known as the lineup from Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza’s X-Force, which debuted in 1991 and saw Cable convert the New Mutants into a more proactive, militaristic group.

RELATED: Who Is the Mysterious X-Man on the First Page of Extermination?

Just as the solicit for Extermination #3 teases “every X-Men team,” writer Ed Brisson also spoke of the event’s importance and connection to past issues of Uncanny X-Men in an interview with Marvel.com. “Our mandate going into this was, ‘Your back issues matter,’” Brisson said. “Every single Uncanny X-Men story involving the Original Five X-Men matters. If the X-Men are here, then they’re not where they’re supposed to be, fighting those they’re supposed to fight. What happens when that past starts to unravel? What’s the butterfly effect on our present?”

The cover and solicitation text for September’s Extermination #3 can be found below:

EXTERMINATION #3 (OF 5)

  • ED BRISSON (W) • PEPE LARRAZ (A)
  • Cover by MARK BROOKS
  • CONNECTING VARIANT COVER BY MIKE HAWTHORNE (3 OF 5)

  • With Ahab hunting the time-traveling X-Men, it’s all hands on deck, as every X-Men team is called to arms and protect the remaining young mutants.
  • But young Jean Grey and her bodyguards aren’t going to lie still for Ahab to come to them…

Duggan’s Cosmic Marvel Saga Counts Down to the Big Finish: Infinity Wars

Duggan’s Cosmic Marvel Saga Counts Down to the Big Finish: Infinity Wars

In last year’s debut issue of the most recent volume of Guardians of the Galaxy, writer Gerry Duggan rose the curtain on a saga that would not only impact the titular heroes, but almost every aspect of Marvel’s Cosmic Universe.

Over the course of the series, major players returned to the cosmic fold like the Nova Corps, the Shi’ar Empire’s Fraternity of Raptors, and most importantly the six immensely powerful artifacts now known as the Infinity Stones. The end of that series set the stage for an intense conflict for control of the Stones between the Guardians and a number of major cosmic players.

Act Two of Duggan’s cosmic saga, the currently unfolding Infinity Countdown, has turned the battle for control of the Infinity Stones into a full blown cosmic conflagration, as the stone wielders pass on the cosmic relics to new owners ,or struggle to retain control of them.

This July, those struggles will come to a head when Duggan and artist Mike Deodato kick off the final act of the writer’s cosmic trilogy in Infinity Wars Prime. CBR spoke with Duggan about the issue, the cold openings of Infinity Countdown that set the stage for it, the recent changes the series wrought to fan-favorite Groot, and the chance to include wide-ranging characters including the Black Widow and Galactus in his grand, cosmic saga.

Infinity Countdown: Black Widow cover by Yasmine Putri

CBR: There have been a lot of interesting scenes in Infinity Countdown, but as a reader I have found the cold openings especially fascinating. They remind me of Walt Simonson’s legendary Thor run in that they involve a forge and seem to foreshadow a greater and coming doom. Was that your intention with those scenes?

Gerry Duggan: Yes! 100 percent! We knew that Infinity Wars was coming. Obviously Infinity Countdown was counting down to something. Guardians of the Galaxy was Act One of my big cosmic story. Infinity Countdown has been Act Two. And Infinity Wars is Act Three.

The beginning forge scenes are just one of the many mysteries in Infinity Countdown. Another major one seems to be the nature of the Infinity Stones. Is this a mystery that we’ll get answers to by the time Countdown is over? Or will the mystery deepen as you move into Infinity Wars?

I think in Countdown, the nature of the looming threat will become a little more in focus. Some of the other mysteries will be answered later in Infinity Wars.

We’ve seen the Infinity Stones change hands a couple of times in this story, and for me one of the most interesting change ups came when Black Widow gained possession of the Space Stone. You and your 1872 collaborator Nik Virella are following up on that development in the Infinity Countdown: Black Widow special. What’s it like reuniting with Nik, and writing a character like Natasha in possession of a cosmic artifact?

It’s been so much fun to reunite with Nik, and this particular story has been a real joy because it’s not often that you get to play with the Widow in a story that is sort of outside the comfort zone of the character. She has the Space Stone and what does that mean for her, and how does it change the kind of stories you can tell with her?

Also, it’s interesting to see what the Mind Stone will do to Turk. He’s not even an A-List villain in Daredevil’s world, where he regularly appears. So if he survives the experience of having the Mind Stone, I imagine he’d be quite an elevated character in the Marvel Universe.

Another interesting development in Infinity Countdown has been the restoration of Groot to his “factory settings.” What inspired this take on Groot? And what’s it like writing him with the ability to express himself with more dialogue?

When we talked about Marvel Legacy, we discussed how to reflect that in our stories. And Groot in his first appearance is a Kirby monster. He’s quite a scary force. So we talked with Bill Rosemann, who is sort of our godfather of the Cosmic universe really in every medium now. When it comes to comics, films and games he is the go-to expert to chat up any sort of deep cut you have. I know he picked Groot to be on the Guardians back in the day because he had that great third person dialogue balloon. And I just sort of missed the sort of Doctor Doom of it all with Groot.

It certainly means more work for me. [Laughs] It would have been easier just to leave him, but we took small Groot in my Guardians run and wanted people to think we were sort of pivoting towards the MCU of it all for synergistic purposes. That really was never the case, though. It was our misdirect so we could tell a horror story with Groot. That felt like the worst thing I could do, and once I had that idea I was like, “I have to do it now.”

[Laughs] In Infinity Countdown #4, the series’ penultimate issue, you brought Galactus into the story in a major way. Have you written the character before this in either of his incarnations, Lifebringer or Devourer?

I really hadn’t. I was super grateful to get a chance to take a whack at the character now, because Galactus is one of those toys that depending on how he’s being used might lead to him going on a shelf for a little while. So I was eager to write him and I was thrilled that were not able to just write a cool Galactus, but also pay off some things. The rule of three is always on my mind.

So technically, the first time I wrote Galactus it wasn’t really Galactus. I got to sort of call back to that gag again in Countdown. Now at the end of Countdown, I get to put a nice button on things. So if you’ve been reading our cosmic stories since Guardians #1, hopefully you really laughed when you got to Infinity Countdown #4.
