Batman Writer Tom King Teases How His Run on the Title Ends… Sort Of

Batman Writer Tom King Teases How His Run on the Title Ends… Sort Of

Tom King is a renowned and fan-favorite writer that has written many modern comic book classics such as Marvel’s The Vision, Vertigo’s The Sheriff of Babylon, DC’s The Omega Men and, currently, Batman. Ever since the DC Rebirth relaunch in 2016, King has been at the helm of the title, guiding the Dark Knight on a journey that examines both his strengths and his weaknesses, as a superhero and a man alike.

Over the summer, the series reached a milestone with its 50th issue, which is said to be roughly the halfway point of the writer’s run on the world’s greatest detective. We may have only seen half of King’s long term plans so far, but already we might have a hint as to how the run will conclude.

RELATED: No, Really, KGBeast Is One of Batman’s Deadliest Foes

If you’ve been following Tom King on Twitter, then you know that the prolific writer has become infamous for something else entirely: his art. The scribe has become known to provide artwork for fans at conventions which feature crude stick figures. King may be an incredible writer, but he’s no master artist. It’s a running joke to be sure — after all, he signs all of his drawings with a message that reads “I’m sorry.”

Over the weekend, while King was at a convention, he was asked “to draw the final cover” of his Batman story by a fan and, of course, he took on the challenge. As is custom, the writer shared the epic artwork for all to see on Twitter and the results are certainly intriguing.

The cover features an exterior shot of the Batburger restaurant that has made sporadic appearances in the writer’s run on the title. Through the window, we see that Batman is sitting at a table along with… someone. The Bat-signal shines bright in the night sky, and there is also a kite riding a steady wind (obviously a reference to King’s signature use of small-time Batman villain Kite-Man). Are Batman and Kite-Man sitting down for a burger?

RELATED: Tony S Daniel Shares Look At Batman #56’s Gold Foil Cover Treatment

This more than likely could be a joke, but it’s also specific enough that it makes us wonder… what if it turns out to be the actual cover of King’s final issue of Batman — or rather, a very simple, very crude take on the final product. If anything, perhaps this very drawing could end up becoming a variant cover for the upcoming issue.

We may not know where his story is going, but the writer certainly does — and he may have just given us a clue.

Mister Miracle Artist Mitch Gerads Reveals the ‘Real’ Issue #12 Variant Cover

Mister Miracle Artist Mitch Gerads Reveals the ‘Real’ Issue #12 Variant Cover

DC artist Mitch Gerads has revealed the “actual” variant cover to Mister Miracle #12, the finale of the Eisner award-winning miniseries from him and writer Tom King.

Gerads previously released an unfinished version of the cover, teasing fans on the ending he and Tom King have planned for the critically-acclaimed and highly-unique title. That cover featured a costumed Scott Free struggling to avoid being enveloped in a curtain-like darkness, with the books’ now-infamous line, “Darkseid is.” The final version he tweeted now adds Scott’s son, Jacob, as he holds onto his father’s leg.

RELATED: Is Mister Miracle DC’s Final Pre-Flashpoint Story – Or Something Else?

The cover gives the impression he’s making daddy-duty hard for the superhero, who has faced trial after tribulation in this book, which has dealt with the shifting power on Apokolips, as well as Scott’s overall depression. The last issue ended with fans wondering if Scott’s life, including baby Jacob, was actually real or a life before Flashpoint.

RELATED: Mitch Gerads Unveils Mister Miracle #12 Variant Cover Ahead of the Series’ Finale

As it stands, this variant doesn’t reveal much when you place it into the context of the previous 11 issues, which is a good thing, given that everyone now expects shocking twists and turns in the finale with Darkseid’s legacy rippling through Scott’s life.

Written by Tom King and illustrated by Mitch Gerads, Mister Miracle #12 goes on sale Oct. 24 from DC Comics.

Doctor Manhattan Literally Destroys the Justice League on Doomsday Clock #9 Cover

Doctor Manhattan Literally Destroys the Justice League on Doomsday Clock #9 Cover

Things have been looking grim in the DC Universe for some time now thanks to the machinations of Doctor Manhattan. From his killing the original Green Lantern in the past to removing the original Wally West from reality, Manhattan has meddled in the lives of the heroes and villains of the DC Universe for some time now, and it looks as though that may be coming to a head soon, as indicated by the cover of Doomsday Clock #9.

RELATED: Comedian is a One-Man Army in Doomsday Clock # 7 Teaser

Shared on colorist Brad Anderson’s Twitter, the cover shows Manhattan standing in front of the empty costumes of several Justice League members, as well as others like Red Robin and the Phantom Stranger. Doctor Manhattan holds his arm out towards the heroes, indicating that he has killed them.

While the full story behind the cover has yet to be revealed, it isn’t shaping up to be a happy one. Bearing in mind all that Manhattan has done to the DC Universe during his brief stay, this may tie into whatever Manhattan has planned for the universe, or foreshadow a scene from later on in the issue.

Tony S Daniel Shares Look At Batman #56’s Gold Foil Cover Treatment

Tony S Daniel Shares Look At Batman #56’s Gold Foil Cover Treatment

Artist Tony S. Daniel has revealed the gold cover to DC’s upcoming Batman #56.

Daniel, who has worked on an earlier volume of the series, from 2009 to 2011, has returned to provide interior and cover art for the October issue. It isn’t just a regular cover, either, instead being a more flashy variant; he revealed on Twitter that it’s a full on gold foil cover.

RELATED: How, and Why, Nightwing Gets His Head Injury

The Dark Knight’s looking to drop both the hammer and sickle on the KGBeast, whose rampage across Gotham City takes a toll on Nightwing when he’s injured in the fray. Blaming himself for his ward’s fate, Batman gets grimmer than usual—and vows to take the Russian assassin down like the Berlin Wall. Is even Gotham City ready for that much violence? The streets will run red like borscht if the Dark Knight gets his way against this Soviet scourge.

Batman #56 continues the storyline that began in the previous issue, in which KGBeast — yes, that KGBeast — shot Nightwing in the head. With his former sidekick in critical condition and already not in a great place, the Dark Knight intends to take out his fury on the assassin, in undoubtedly brutal fashion. This is part of a recent resurgence of the KGBeast, which included a role in All-Star Batman by Scott Snyder and John Romita Jr.

Batman #56, written by Tom King and with art by Tony S. Daniel, will be released Oct. 7 from DC.

Murphy’s Batman: Curse of the White Knight Introduces Azrael

Murphy’s Batman: Curse of the White Knight Introduces Azrael

Superstar comic book creator Sean Gordon Murphy’s next project has been announced and its a followup to his popular DC Black Label miniseries Batman: White Knight.

After posting a teaser image with a drawing of occasional Bat-Family ally Azrael, Gotham City’s holy protector and one-time replacement Batman, Murphy confirmed his out-of-continuity Batman story would receive a sequel in next year’s Batman: Curse of the White Knight. Promotional artwork, drawn by Murphy, is below:

RELATED: Sean Murphy Seemingly Confirms Batman: White Knight 2

“My goal with White Knight was to write Gotham as a real city, not a comic book city,” explained Murphy in an interview with Paste Magazine announcing the sequel. “I wanted to turn the reader into a citizen of Gotham and pose questions about Batman that we would ask in the real world, like, ‘Is Batman a criminal and are the police complicit? Who pays for all the collateral damage when he fights a villain? What kind of white-collar corruption would we expect to see from Gotham’s politicians and business leaders, considering they allow Batman to exist?'”

The previous miniseries had seen the Joker seemingly become reformed and turn to politics, leading a task force against the Dark Knight. With a new, fearsome vigilante in town, the Joker may be forced to trust in unusual allies to take Azrael down. DC Comics’ official synopsis for the miniseries along with its first cover, drawn by Murphy and colored by Matt Hollingsworth, is below:

Batman: Curse of the White Knight
Writer/Artist: Sean Gordon Murphy
Release Date: 2019
In this explosive sequel to Sean Murphy’s critically acclaimed blockbuster BATMAN: WHITE KNIGHT, the Joker recruits a savage partner to help him expose a shocking revelation about the Wayne family’s legacy and run Gotham into the ground. As Batman rushes to protect the city and his loved ones from this corrupt conspiracy, the mystery of his ancestry unravels and deals a devastating blow to the Dark Knight. Exciting new villains and unexpected allies will clash across history in this unforgettable chapter of the WHITE KNIGHT saga—and the truth about the blood they shed will shake Gotham to its core!

Written and illustrated by Sean Gordon Murphy, Batman: Curse of the White Knight is expected to debut sometime in 2019 from DC Comics.

Comic Book Community Responds to the Passing of Norm Breyfogle

Comic Book Community Responds to the Passing of Norm Breyfogle

It was announced earlier today that famed Batman artist Norm Breyfogle had passed away over the weekend. Breyfogle was best known for the six years he spent dedicated to drawing the character Batman at DC Comics, and the years after when he would go on to intermittently reprise his role illustrating the Dark Knight while also helming his own projects.

Breyfogle was also known for his six-issue creator-owned work Metaphysique, which combines elements of virtual reality, the mystical and the superhero genre. Also of note is Breyfogle’s entry in Malibu Comics’ Ultraverse line, Prime, which focused on a teenage boy who could turn into an adult superhero.

RELATED: Norm Breyfogle: ‘I’m Crying Tears of Joy Every Day’

While the details the Breyfogle’s death are being kept private for the moment, the artist did suffer a stroke in 2015. Breyfogle subsequently created a crowdfunding campaign to help him pay for his medical costs, an amount totaling roughly $200,000. The nonprofit Hero Initiative helps comic book creators, many of whom work as uninsured freelancers, to pay for such medical fees in times of crisis.

As a veteran of the comic book industry, Breyfogle had the opportunity to meet and befriend many other creators. Today, many of those creators took to Twitter to share their condolences, grief and fond memories in light of the artist’s passing. Here is how the comic book industry remembers Norm Breyfogle, one of their own:

Steve Aoki Announces Neon Future Comic Series With New Trailer

Steve Aoki Announces Neon Future Comic Series With New Trailer

Grammy-nominated international producer and DJ Steve Aoki is teaming up with Eisner Award-winner Jim Krueger, Impact Theory’s Tom Bilyeu and artists Neil Edwards and Jheremy Raapack for a new original comic book series. Titled Neon Future, the series will send readers to a world where advanced technology is illegal, sparking a war between those augmented by tech and those who are not.

According to the series’ official description,

Nearly thirty years from now, in response to a global economic crisis, the U.S. has enacted Article 10, commonly known as “The Return,” which made all advanced technologies illegal. The Return promised to create jobs by eliminating the technology that had displaced so many workers through automation. But the lasting result has been an increase in the class divide, blatant bigotry, and a war between the Augmented, who have chosen to integrate technology into their bodies, and the Authentic, who have not. Out of the systematic oppression of the techno-class, a resistance movement known as Neon Future was born.

Led by the mysterious Kita Sovee (inspired by Steve Aoki), they strive to bring peace by showing the world a brighter future in harmony with technology. When Neon Future brings TV star, Clay Campbell, back from the dead with a rare technology, the uneasy balance between the government and the techno-class is threatened. Clay learns from the elusive rebels about the true nature of his past and his unexpected role in a brewing civil war. From Steve Aoki, and Eisner Award-Winning writer Jim Krueger, comes an innovative and compelling story of the dangers of unchecked power and the limitless nature of human potential.

RELATED: NYCC: Under-the-Radar Panels You’ll Want To Catch

“My obsession with mixing science and tech all started when I was a kid reading comic books. It took me on a ride to see how far the imagination can go, seeing ideas crossing the threshold from science fiction to fact,” Aoki said in a statement. “That’s the foundation of Neon Future, where we’re headed as we evolve, our downfalls, our victories and breakthroughs to find a way to survive and thrive through it all.”

RELATED: NYCC: The Biggest Comics Panels You Can’t Afford To Miss

“I’m so excited to be part of Neon Future,” Krueger added. “It has all the elements of a dynamic story, with compelling characters who evolve into true heroes by overcoming suffering. Working closely with Steve Aoki’s extraordinary imagination our team has built something really special.”

The first issue of the series boasts a main cover by Jheremy Raapack and variants from several artists, including Kim Jung Gi and Mau Lencinas. CBR can exclusively reveal the Lencinas variant, which is included in the gallery below. Concept artist Maciej Kuciara, whose past work includes Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, provided key art.

The comic series has been timed to release with Aoki’s “Lie to Me” music video and “Be Somebody” single with DJ/producer Nicky Romero ft. Kiiara. Together, Aoki’s creations form “the overarching visionary world of Neon Future, which strives toward the singularity in a utopian convergence of technology and humanity.”

Aoki, Krueger, Bilyeu, Edwards and Raapack’s Neon Future #1 will be available for free Thursday, October 4 at Impact Theory’s New York Comic Con booth. Free digital copies will be provided to those who sign up for the newsletter. The first issue is currently available for pre-order.

Sean Gordon Murphy Teases His Next DC Project With New Artwork

Sean Gordon Murphy Teases His Next DC Project With New Artwork

Sean Gordon Murphy, the creator behind the breakout series Batman: White Knight, has teased the announcement of his next DC project for 2019 with artwork featuring the man who replaced Batman after his back was broken by Bane, Azrael.

“BREAKING: get ready for a huge announcement about my next book in 2019…” Gordon tweeted late Wednesday afternoon. Gordon depicts Jean-Paul Valley in his Azrael armor while holding a flaming sword in his hand.

RELATED: Sean Murphy Seemingly Confirms Batman: White Knight 2

Murphy teased a sequel to Batman: White Knight in August with another tweet of a “secret project” and a sketch of a character slipping on the Batman cowl. Whether its Bruce Wayne or Jack Napier, who is the civilian identity of The Joker remains to be seen. We also have to wonder if Murphy is working on a new Azrael series in the main DC Universe, or will he adapt the hero for what he’s dubbed the “Murphyverse.”

DC added Batman: White Knight to its Black Label imprint once the series came to a conclusion. With New York Comic Con beginning next week, we can anticipate the big reveal to take place at the event.

RELATED: DC’s Black Label Release of Batman: White Knight Will Not Be Uncensored After All

Batman: White Knight dove deep into the connection between Gotham’s resident vigilante, Batman, and his archnemesis, the Joker. After consuming strange, unmarked pills, Joker is cured of his psychopathy and vows to lead the charge against vigilantism in Gotham. The series forced the franchise’s character, and readers alike, to reassess what they believe about Batman, the Joker and their strange, strange relationship.

Breyfogle’s name is synonymous with Batman. His early work consisted of providing art for titles like American Flagg and Marvel Fanfare, but in 1987 he was recruited by DC Comics to revive the Detective Comics brand. Breyfogle would go on to draw Batman for six years and was instrumental in redesigning Robin in 1990. During his time drawing Batman, Breyfogle also helped to co-create villains like the Ventriloquist and Scarface alongside Alan Grant.

From DC Comics, Breyfogle moved on to Malibu Comics, where he provided art for the Prime series. In 1994, Breyfogle penned and illustrated his own creator-owned series Metaphysique, a series about six people who unwittingly become involved in a mad scientist’s plan to become a god. The six-issue series mixed eclectic themes like the mystical, virtual reality and the superhero genre.

Breyfogle would go on to pencil series like Shadow of the Bat, Anarky, Batman: The Abduction, Superman, Batman: Dreamland and The Spectre, among others. Aside from the visual arts, Breyfogle was also a novelist and a poet, penning more than 1,300 haikus as part of a five-month marathon at one point.

In light of the loss, many creators in the comics industry have come forward to express their condolences and share fond memories of Breyfogle.

Breyfogle suffered a stroke in 2015, after which he opened a crowdfunding campaign to help cover his medical expenses and the cost of ongoing treatment, which was estimated to be as high as $200,000, according to Paste Magazine. The Hero Initiative is a nonprofit that is dedicated to helping comic book creators pay such medical fees in times of crisis.

Action Comics Easter Egg Seems To Reveal Bendis’ First DC Event

Action Comics Easter Egg Seems To Reveal Bendis’ First DC Event

An easter egg in the preview for Action Comics #1003 may reveal the title of writer Brian Michael Bendis‘ first event storyline for DC Comics.

The right side of a page in the preview for Action Comics #1003 contains a piece of highlighted paper referencing a “DC Comics Mystery Event” by Bendis and a redacted artist. According to the easter egg, the event’s title is “Leviathan,” which may indicate an event focusing on the criminal organization first introduced in Grant Morrison and David Finch’s 2011 Batman: The Return #1. Although details about the potential event’s plot are unclear, the paper, which a highlighter and mouse obscure, seems to make reference to Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen.

RELATED: Lois Lane’s Mysterious Book Is About Much More Than Superman’s Secret Identity

As Bendis’ first event for DC hasn’t been confirmed, there’s a chance that this may be a joke, not a hint at a massive project for the writer. However, the easter egg is sure to stoke speculation until Bendis’ first event is announced.

Bendis signed an exclusive deal with DC in November, which marked an end to his partnership with Marvel. Bendis made his DC debut with a story in Action Comics #1000. The writer currently works on Superman and Action Comics.

How well does Clark Kent know his own city? Are the threats targeting Metropolis new or something older and more dangerous than they seem? With mobsters being killed off and the Daily Planet staff hunting for answers, it’s up to Superman to discover what lurks in the underside of the city he thought he knew so well. Who is the Red Mist, and why has Superman never heard of someone so powerful and dangerous? And what is Lois Lane doing with Lex Luthor?

Action Comics #1003 goes on sale this Wednesday.

EXCLUSIVE: A Dystopic Plague is Evolving in Empty Man #1 Preview

EXCLUSIVE: A Dystopic Plague is Evolving in Empty Man #1 Preview

Cullen Bunn will return to the world of The Empty Man this November and, if an early preview for the upcoming reboot’s debut issue is any indication, the plague-stricken Earth has found new and inventive ways of getting even worse. The exclusive preview from BOOM! Studios reveals that the virus that decimated mankind — inspiring unsettling religious devotion in the process — has evolved, and it’s only getting worse.

The Empty Man #1 is a continuation of Bunn’s 2014 series by the same name. That series introduced readers to the concept of The Empty Man pandemic that seemingly came out of nowhere. The disease itself heavily affects human cognition, making victims irrational and violent. The original series focused on the deification of the disease through the lens of the FBI and CDC investigators sent out into the field to investigate.

RELATED: Lev Grossman’s The Magicians Expands to Comics At BOOM! Studios

The rebooted The Empty Man #1 looks to take a different approach, focusing instead on a family and their encounters with the disease. While the government demands that anyone showing signs of the disease surrender themselves, the Kerry family isn’t abiding by that rule for one simply reason: The people who give themselves up don’t return. So, Melissa Kerry, her husband and her daughter all do their best to hide the fact that Melissa is sick with The Empty Man.

The Kerry family’s predicament is bound to lead to trouble, though. The preview reveals that the government’s response to the disease has become ever more radicalized, likely due to the disease itself evolving. Now, The Empty Man plague is also apparently prompting physical changes in human beings. Readers get a clear view of a man covered in boils scratching at his blood-covered skin in an attempt to rid himself of his affliction.

RELATED: BOOM! Studios Acquires Buffy the Vampire Slayer License

The Empty Man is an unflinching, insightful look at the way we deal with tragedy both abroad and close to home, wrapped up in a haunting horror narrative,” said Eric Harburn, Senior Editor at BOOM! Studios in a press release. “From the first page, readers will glimpse a world infected by a terror that has irrevocably changed it — and might just see a bit more of the real world than they ever expected, thanks to the incredible work from Cullen, Jesús, Niko, and Ed.”

The Empty Man #1 from BOOM! Studios will go on sale on Nov. 7. The issue is written by Cullen Bunn. Jesús Hervás is the issue’s artist. A preview of the issue’s cover, variant and first few pages can be found below.

Dark Horse to Publish Minecraft Graphic Novel

Dark Horse to Publish Minecraft Graphic Novel

Dark Horse Comics announced on Monday that they are partnering with Mojang and Microsoft Studios for a graphic novel based on the popular sandbox world-building game Minecraft.

The graphic novel, called Minecraft Volume One, is the first official, licensed publication to take place in the world of the best-selling game, though fan-made comics have been written and disseminated online for years.

Dark Horse’s announcement comes ahead of New York Comic Con and MINECON Earth and is the first in a multi-project agreement among the three companies.

“We are very excited at the prospect of bringing Minecraft to comics,” said Dark Horse President Mike Richardson. “The world of Minecraft is vast with countless stories to tell.”

Richardson also addressed the involvement of his new business partners. “We look forward to working with the great people at Mojang AB and Microsoft to bring these stories to its enormous fan base,” he said.

Lydia Winters, chief brand officer of Mojang AB, expressed her enthusiasm for joining forces with Dark Horse. “We can’t wait to follow the incredible imaginations that Dark Horse’s comic creators will bring to the world of Minecraft,” she said.

Minecraft Volume One will be written by Sfé R. Monster, writer of The Beyond Anthology and Seven Stories from the Sea. It will be drawn by artist Sarah Graley, known for Kim Reaper: Vampire Island and Our Super Adventure. Lettering will be handled by John J. Hill, who worked on Superman and Bedtime Games.

The plot centers on Tyler and his friends, who are seeking the ultimate challenge within the world of Minecraft. Their quest leads them to the End to face the Ender Dragon.

Minecraft Volume One goes on sale summer 2019.
