WWE’s Drew Gulak Releases Comic Condemning the Evils of ‘High-Flying’ Moves
WWE‘s 205 Live is a show dedicate to cruiserweights, wrestlers who weigh in at under 205 lbs. That means when you tune in, you can expect to see flashy entrances, colorful characters and some of the most daring, death-defying moves anywhere in the world. However, there’s one man trying to change all that; Drew Gulak, a WWE superstar who has pledged to work tirelessly for a better 205 Live by getting rid of the chants, the costumes and especially the dangerous top-rope maneuvers in favor of traditional technical mat wrestling.
Last night during the broadcast of WWE Raw, Gulak unveiled a comic written and drawn by Elaine Le Febvre and Kitty Bell (and paid for by the friends of supports of the Drew Gulak Campaign For A Better 205 Live) in which a young, talented potential wrestler is drawn in by the siren song of a flash costume and high-flying moves. Thankfully, a run-in with a fan reminds him that all he needs to be a great wrestler is to go out and be a great wrestler; after all, that’s what Drew Gulak would do.

— Drew Gulak (@DrewGulak) July 30, 2018
Gulak has used a number of methods to get his message of a better 205 Live and his “No Fly Zone” across to fans, including buttons, placards and his trademark powerpoint presentations. This comic represents a new evolution in the Drew Gulak Campaign For A Better 205 Live, reaching directly out to viewers via social media.
The comic, influenced by Jack Chick’s notorious “Chick Tracts” which warned readers of the dangers of rock and roll, dancing and Dungeons & Dragons, gives readers everything they need to help spread the message of a better 205 Live.
205 Live airs every Tuesday on WWE Network at 10pm EST.

Kevin Conroy Explains Why Batman Is Better Than ‘Boring’ Superman
It’s an argument that has raged for decades, but now voice actor Kevin Conroy had waded into the debate to explain why Batman is better than Superman.
Although Conroy is undoubtedly biased — he has voiced the Dark Knight across animation and video games for more than 25 years — he argued his case for why the Man of Steel is no match for Bruce Wayne’s masked alter ego.
RELATED: Kevin Conroy Weighs In on Christian Bale’s Batman Voice
Speaking with Red Carpet News, Conroy explained that Batman is always going to be superior to Superman because of his backstory. “Let’s face it, Batman is complicated,” he said. “He’s got issues, he’s dark, and he’s got problems. And he overcomes them all, which is what people love about him.”
Comparing Bruce Wayne’s tragic history and the grim streets of Gotham to Kal-El’s flight from Krypton, Conroy continued, “But Superman, he’s square-jawed, farm-fed, he’s just so boring. He’s got no issues. He can see through walls, he can jump over planes, he can fly. What’s the challenge for him?”
The animation veteran admitted he frequently has the debate with Superman voice actor Tim Daly, who of course has his own biases. According to Conroy, Daly argues, “But Batman is so screwed up.”
RELATED: Kevin Conroy Explains Why Batman: The Animated Series Ended
While Batman definitely puts the dark in Dark Knight, that isn’t to say Superman hasn’t had his fair share of murky moments over the years. It isn’t always a simple case of writing puff pieces for the Daily Planet and going home to see Lois Lane.
Speaking about Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, Conroy acknowledged, “They dirtied him up a little bit, which I think is really smart because he was dull, ya know?” However, he said he can’t be swayed from siding with Batman.
The case of Batman Metropolis Marvel was a big part of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, and the entire point of 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It all comes down to a matter of preference, but asking Conroy is as much a loaded question as asking Mark Hamill whether The Joker is better than Batman.
Even after nearly 80 years of Batman and Superman, there will never be a definitive answer as to who is the superior superhero. That being said, Conroy clearly has his favorite DC champion and is firmly sticking with it.

SDCC: Failure is the Best Teacher in the World of Comic Book Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding is based on trust, and most of the time it works. The “Publishers Weekly: Crowdfunding Ethics and Evolution” panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, moderated by Publishers Weekly editor Calvin Reid, was on hand to talk about what happens when it doesn’t work.
“Failure is a good teacher,” said attorney Jeff Trexler. According to Trexler, when a Kickstarter fails, it’s often due to inexperience: “A lot of times, people’s grasp exceeds their reach,” he said. “Another problem is they can’t take something to scale. They can create a project or get a service somewhere along the line, but they can’t meet the demand for it and it becomes unprofitable or even impossible for them to fulfill.”
Trexler cited Universal FanCon, a convention funded on Kickstarter, as an example of what can go wrong. “It ended up falling apart over the hotel payment,” he said. “You have to pay for a certain number of rooms. Another rule: Read the contracts.”
Not to mention the platform’s fine print. “If you are going to do this, read the Kickstarter terms and conditions, particularly numbers 3 and 4 — what not to do,” Trexler said. “They are a model of the form. They’re not written in legalese, they are written in plain language.”
RELATED: SDCC: Border Narratives Panel Casts Comics as a Form of Resistance
Keeping accurate books is important especially when money is going to development: “If that money is accounted for, it doesn’t have to be refunded,” Trexler said. “The terms and conditions say to keep accounts, but they are not holding creators accountable for saving all the money and refunding all of it” if a project fails. On the other hand, creators should be careful about marketing claims — that’s what can trigger state consumer protection laws.
Kel McDonald, who has run 14 Kickstarters, all of them successful, had more advice: Budget for emergencies. She typically sets aside $2,000 of her goal for contingencies, which came in handy at least once, when copies of a book got lost in the mail and had to be replaced.
When a project runs into problems, she said, the best thing is to let people know as soon as possible. In one instance, she hurt her hand and could not complete a comic by the promised date. “Because I told them, I only had one of my backers complain,” she said.
Shipping out physical rewards is the hardest part of running a Kickstarter, McDonald said, so she experimented recently with a campaign that had all digital rewards. “The trade-off was fulfillment was easier, but promotion was harder,” she said. “People want a physical object.” While an all-digital Kickstarter is doable, she said, the goal should be smaller than one with physical rewards.
RELATED: Comic Book Heroes That Used to be Vietnam Veterans But Now Aren’t
There was some talk of successes, too. Josh O’Neil of Beehive Press (and previously, Locust Moon Press), referred to his work as “quixotic publishing”: “Strange formats, oversize books, newspapers, but also artists with really fascinating, unique, visionary approaches, marginalized voices — things that traditional publishing says don’t work are often the things that work best with crowdfunding,” he said. “You see these projects explode because there is a pre-existing audience that was not being served.”
“Comics is a really robust category on Kickstarter,” said Camilla Zhang, who recently joined the company as their comics outreach lead. “It’s a community that is really engaged with the creators that they support, so we have a lot of repeat backers.” Comics creators have raised $75 million since Kickstarter launched in 2009, she said, and she sees the category growing even more.
Part of her job is to help creators make that happen, whether their projects are large or small. “There are zine makers who say ‘I can’t,’” she said, “but set a low goal of $500 and you can get your zines published, you can bring them to shows, you are connecting with your audience online and in-person, so you are supporting your own craft that way.”
McDonald was the third comics creator to use Kickstarter, and she did it to take the risk out of her business. “I knew I had an audience for my webcomic, but I didn’t know if they were interested in buying the book or just wanted the option to be available,” she said. “In the past, people would say ‘Cool T-shirt!’ and then people wouldn’t buy it. So Kickstarter was a way to say “You want to buy a book? Here’s a way to make that happen.’ Nine years later, I’ve done 14 Kickstarters.”

SDCC: Border Narratives Panel Casts Comics as a Form of Resistance
Ricardo Padilla grew up in East Los Angeles, in a neighborhood so tough that more people were killed there some years than on the Gaza Strip. He escaped by staying in his room and reading Marvel comics; Silver Surfer and other characters opened up new worlds to him. But when he discovered Love and Rockets, by Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, he found his own world again.
“That was the first time I was able to see Chicano characters, [and] Chicanas, that looked like the people in my neighborhood, doing things that reflected my life,” he said at the “Border Narratives: Beyond the Wall” panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego. “They weren’t flying through space, but they were people that could be my tÃas [aunts] and my mom’s friends.”
At a time when, as moderator Chloe Ramos-Peterson pointed out, harassment and discrimination against Latinx people are on the rise, the creators on the panel stressed the importance of stories as a way to build community, as well as a place for readers to see themselves and for creators to show others the realities of their lives. And perhaps shatter some stereotypes as well.
“I remember seeing myself in comics very early on,” said Johnnie Christmas (Firebug). “I would be reading Batman or what have you, and I didn’t see anybody that looked like me, and then a crime would break out, and there I was, suddenly, on the page, getting beaten over the head or kicked or punched.” When he started making comics, Christmas said, he made it a point to give his characters a rich inner life. “I think it is very important… to take back our narratives and position ourselves in a way we want to be positioned — and where we actually are,” he said.
Artist Zeke Peña (Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide) sees stories as a way to counter the claim that immigrants are threats who need to be policed. “For me it is about complicating [current portrayals of Latinos],” he said. “We complicate it with introducing our own personal stories, our own personal narratives, to show the tenderness of a tender moment, like in [the Disney movie] Coco, how to show these very personal and tender moments.”
“Representation can be resistance,” said Padilla, who runs the Latino Comics Expo, recalling a conversation when Love and Rockets creator Jaime Hernandez was on a panel he was moderating. “Somebody from the audience asked, ‘Jaime, do you think you are a political artist?’ and he said, ‘Oh no, you know, I just draw, I just do comics.’ And someone in the audience actually got up and said, ‘You don’t know how strongly your work has to inspired us to go out in the community and spread art and spread stories.’”
“I get letters from a lot of young women, especially, who tell me ‘I had never seen myself in a book until I read your book’” said Isabel Quintero, the writer of Photographic. “To me, that’s a big thing, because [we are] representing ourselves in our experiences, and the different experiences that we have, breaking the idea that we are a monolith. We are not. My Chicano experience in Southern California is very different from Zeke’s in El Paso. There is no one way to be Chicanx, there is no one way to be Mexican, there is no one way to be anything.”
As a high school art teacher, Marco Finnegan (Lizard in a Zoot Suit, Crossroad Blues) saw his students’ excitement at seeing the particulars of their lives portrayed on the page or the screen. “A lot of times kids feel like they are the only ones who are going through that experience,” he said, “but if you show them a movie like Coco—the kids were coming back like, ‘Mr. Finnegan did you see Coco? They had a crucifix made out of palm fronds in the background. I’ve never seen that before, can they do that?’… Typically what we have seen is Hispanic characters are gang bangers or gardeners or whatever. Now you are seeing them in spotlight telling stories, and one of my kids said, ‘It’s like they took those characters that you always see in the movies and followed them home.’”
“There has always been a history of negativity coming our way, and it’s our responsibility to rise to the challenge and to lift each other up and face it,” said Christmas. “It’s been going on for a long time, and I don’t think it is going to be ending anytime soon, unfortunately. Hopefully it will, but I don’t let it scare me. We can’t stop. There’s no choice. We have to move forward and we have to keep telling these stories. There are those coming up after us, and they need to see us creating things that represent them. They need to see themselves, as told to [and] by people who look like them, and to shine a light on the false narratives that people are trying to cast on us, because it’s not their story to tell.”

Infinity Wars Trailer Reveals [SPOILER]’s Death, Infinity Warps Connection
WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Infinity Wars Prime #1, on sale now.
Marvel Comics has released a new trailer for its latest event series, Infinity Wars. The video stars Infinity Wars writer Gerry Duggan, editor Jordan D. White and Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski discussing the shocking death of Thanos at the hands of the mysterious Requiem in Infinity Wars Prime #1, along with how the series sets up the character mash-ups in the spinoff series, Infinity Warps.
White kicks off the trailer with three words most fans never thought they’d hear: “Thanos is dead.” From there, the trailer begins shows the final pages of Infinity Wars Prime #1 as Requiem cuts off Thanos’ head, as well as the hacking of the Mad Titan’s body into tiny pieces. “We’ve told fans this is the summer of secrets,” Cebulski said. “And if you didn’t believe us before, after Infinity Wars Prime, you definitely have to.”
RELATED: Infinity Wars Prime May Have Just Teased Marvel’s Next Big Villain
“I didn’t pitch [Thanos]’s death lightly,” Duggan added. “It’s integral to the story of Infinity Wars. You’ve all seen Thanos with the [Infinity] Gauntlet, and this is a new story.”
Duggan would also compare Act I of Infinity Wars to The Warriors, with each gang possessing one of the six Infinity Stones: Adam Warlock has the Soul Gem; Captain Marvel is the owner of the Reality Stone; the street-level criminal Turk Barrett has the Mind Stone; Drax is the keeper of the Power Stone; Doctor Strange has the Time Stone; and Black Widow was given the Space Stone from a resurrected Wolverine.
RELATED: Marvel Warned Us – But We Never Predicted Infinity Wars’ Big Moment
We also learn additional details regarding Infinity Warps, which takes different heroes from across the Marvel Universe and combines them into one new character. According to White, every character in the Marvel Universe will take part in the Infinity Warps. “In Infinity Wars #3, we create something called the Infinity Warps. All the characters in the Marvel Universe get smashed together into these new characters,” White said. “Iron Man and Thor get smashed together into Iron Hammer. Spider-Man and Moon Knight get smashed together to become Arachknight.”
Finally, the bigger question for Infinity Wars is the identity of Thanos’ killer, Requiem. What is Requiem going to do with the Infinity Stones? Of course, a couple of different theories have surfaced regarding who is behind the Requiem armor. The list of suspects ranges from Thanos’ adopted daughters, Gamora and Nebula, to Terraxia (Thanos’ dead lover) and Phyla-Vell (a former Captain Marvel and Quasar). As it stands, Requiem has delivered the opening salvo for Infinity Wars by killing Thanos.

Marvel Debuts New What-If Cover Art, Story Details
Marvel Comics recently announced it will bring back its popular What If? comic book series in the form of six one-shots slated for release later this year. Today, the publisher revealed new cover art and additional story details for the six announced titles.
The six titles are What If? Magik, What If? X-Men, What If? Thor, What If? Ghost Rider, What If? Spider-Man and What If? The Punisher. The new story details reveal a little more about the previously announced one-shots, while the art provides a better look at these strange, off-shoot characters and their origins.
RELATED: Marvel Revives What If? With a Series of One-Shots
Marvel’s What If? series began in 1977 with What If Spider-Man Had Joined the Fantastic Four?, a story that reimagined Peter Parker’s debut as a superhero. Originally, the series was narrated by the alien Watcher Uatu. This narrative conceit was abandoned when a story twist in Fantastic Four cast Uatu as a traitor to his own kind.
The What If? series has had its fair share of influential titles, including a comic that imagined the consequences of Gwen Stacy surviving her fatal encounter with the Green Goblin and another Spider-Man story that introduced Spider-Girl.
The upcoming What If? stories will go on sale in the fall.

Simpsons Comics To End After 25 Years, With Bongo’s Future Unclear
Simpsons Comics, the 25-year-old flagship title of Matt Groening’s Bongo Comics, will end in October with its 245th issue. this October.
The news was announced last week at Comic-Con International, and confirmed Thursday on the company’s Facebook page.

“It’s a heartfelt series farewell from your pals at Bongo,” the publisher stated. “A tale of twists, turns, irradiated missteps, and surprise cameos that will have your head spinning, bosom heaving and wallet screaming to be emptied! We hate to say goodbye, so let’s just leave it at ‘Smell ya later!’”
At the same time as that announcement, Bongo’s other major title, SpongeBob Comics, is taking “an extended break,” leading to speculation about the future of the company.

Debuting in 1993, Simpsons Comics has told stories that might not have worked on the animated series, as well as sequels to events depicted on television. The title also launched a few spinoffs, most notably an ongoing Bart Simpson series that ended in 2016, and Treehouse of Horror, released annually as a Halloween special.
Simpsons Comics #245 and SpongeBob Comics #85 go on sale Oct. 17.

How the Digital Comics Revolution Is Helping Manga’s American Growth
The manga industry panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego kicked off with two announcements of new licenses, both classic series that have never been published in English before: Fantagraphics will publish Moto Hagio’s The Poe Clan, and the digital publisher Media Do will publish 31 volumes of Keisuke Itagaki’s martial arts manga Baki in August, in advance of the release of the anime on Netflix’s premium anime service this fall.
The Poe Clan is the latest volume in Fantagraphics’ line of classic manga, which is curated and translated by Rachel Thorn. The second volume of Hagio’s surrealistic sci-fi tale Otherworld Barbara, also published by Fantagraphics, was nominated for an Eisner Award this year. Thorn described The Poe Clan as “a series of interrelated stories that are not necessarily linear. It’s very philosophical and it also features beautiful vampire boys.” The first of the two volumes will be out in 2019 or 2020.

Daihei Shiohama, President and CEO of Media- Do international, announced the Baki license. Baki is the sequel to the 42-volume Baki the Grappler, which was partially published in English in the Raijin Comics anthology in the early 2000s.
Erik Ko of Udon Entertainment had an update on the release of another classic title, The Rose of Versailles, which was announced in 2015. “You will be seeing the reveal of the covers next week,” he said, to applause from the audience. “Next week there will be some news about it. It’s happening, I just want to take the time to make sure I do it justice.”
The industry roundtable, led by journalist Deb Aoki, is an annual event that always features a lively discussion about the business of licensing and localizing manga. This time, Aoki turned the spotlight on the licensing side, asking the panel what they look for when licensing manga for the American market.
“I look for stuff that will serve underserved people, but also stuff that is going to be popular and sell as well,” said Christopher Butcher, editorial consultant for Viz Media. Since Viz is co-owned by the Japanese publishers Shueisha and Shogakukan, they already have a pipeline for manga, especially shonen. “It’s no secret that as a gay dude, I want there to be more gay manga,” he said. “For me, it’s looking for things that are outside of what’s already being done to look for ways we can expand the audience, engage new fans. A lot of people age out of manga. Shonen and action-oriented seinen and shoujo are so prevalent, but at some point you age out of those stories. Some people have loved Dragon Ball for 40 years, and in Japan they move on to manga that speaks to them when they are living the life of a 40-year-old salaryman.”
RELATED: Attack On Titan’s Season 3 Premiere Reveals the Anime’s True Enemy
Digital media is diversifying the manga scene in Japan, Thorn said: “You are getting to a point where there aren’t any massive hits now like there used to be, like Dragon Ball. Instead you’ve got lots of little hits, that are made possible through digital… Tiny publishers and unknown artist are finding a market these days, and I hope they are going to eventually work their way into the English market.”
In Japan, readers can get the first volume of any manga for free online, Thorn said, and Viz editor David Brothers pointed to Kodansha Comics as an American publisher that does a lot of digital-first series. “Tokyo Tarareba Girls was digital first, and it’s my favorite book,” he said. “Digital is much less expensive, so there is a lower barrier of entry. As e-readers get better and cheaper, we will see more.”
“Last year the amount of money paid for digital manga exceeded that for paperbacks,” Thorn said. “There are more people reading manga now than when manga magazines [were at their peak].”
Digital publishers still have to bear the costs of translation and localization, Shiohama pointed out, although he held out the possibility that artificial intelligence could help with translation in the future. Still, he said, “Japanese publishers want to come abroad. As long as you support the digital program, that is going to happen.”

IDW Co-Founder Ted Adams Steps Down As CEO
Ted Adams, the co-founder and longtime CEO of IDW Publishing, has stepped down from his role as CEO of IDW Media Holdings, with former Paramount TV chairman Kerry McCluggage set to succeed him.
Adams will take a sabbatical, but plans to return shortly in a more creative role at IDW.
RELATED: IDW, Marvel Team for New Line of ‘Middle-Grade’ Comics
Adams co-founded IDW in 1999 along with Alex Garner, Kris Oprisko and Robbie Robbins. Originally, the company was a creative services business. Prior to its purchase by DC Comics, Wildstorm maintained a creative services business. Those clients were going to be left in the lurch when Wildstorm gave up the creative services aspect upon becoming part of DC Comics. So IDW was formed to take over the former Wildstorm clients. Thus, right from the start, the company was a profitable business. Within a few years, IDW expanded into comic book publishing and now, almost two decades later, it’s one of the most successful comic book companies, and has made significant inroads into the world of television, as well.
It’s that television future that likely led to the hiring of longtime television executive McCluggage as the new CEO. IDW Media Holdings currently has Wyonnna Earp on Syfy (which was recently renewed for a fourth season). The company also have two major series orders from Netflix: V-Wars and a much-anticipated adaptation of Locke and Key. With IDW flourishing in television, McCluggage presumably will help the company position itself for even more expansion into that market.
RELATED: IDW Hires John Barber as Editor-in-Chief
This marks the latest in major changes at the top of IDW, as Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall left the company earlier this year, with John Barber succeeding him in that role. It was just three years ago that IDW Publishing was renamed as IDW Media Holdings, with Adams being named CEO.
The comic book side of IDW has also made major waves recently, with the company striking a deal to create all-ages comic books featuring Marvel’s superheroes.

Justice League: John Stewart Stars on Jim Lee’s Issue 6 Cover
John Stewart steps into the spotlight of Jim Lee’s latest variant cover for Scott Snyder and Jorge Jimenez’s Justice League.
Ever since DC’s premier ensemble series was relaunched last month, Lee has provided stunning variant covers for every issue each focusing on a different member of the team. The debut issue showcased Batman in action while the upcoming fifth issue centered on Cyborg.

John Stewart’s appearance as Green Lantern is intriguing given his role so far in the new series: The superhero was targeted by Sinestro as supervillain launched the Ultraviolet Corps with the brand new Lantern Corps tapping into the previously unseen Ultraviolet Spectrum. As part of Sinestro’s plot, Stewart was transformed into an Ultraviolet Lantern and unable to use his trusty Green Lantern power ring.
The sixth issue promises to continue to raise the stakes against DC’s flagship superteam as the heroes face threats from all sides. As the Flash deals with the newly discovered Still Force, Lex Luthor and the Joker race to reach a fragment of the Source Wall before the team. Meanwhile, Sinestro’s Ultraviolet Lanterns launch an ambitious, cosmic assault of their own.

If Lee’s variant cover is any indicator, Stewart will be packing some serious, willpower-fueled heat in his latest bid to defend the DC Universe.

Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples Announce Year-Long Saga Hiatus
The acclaimed hit Image Comics series, Saga, will be taking a break of at least a year as creators Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughan look to “creatively recharge” before finishing the epic, well, saga, of their heroes, Alana and Marko, and their daughter Hazel.
The upcoming break was announced in the letters column of this week’s Saga #54, which completes the series’ ninth storyline. Since the 12-time Eisner Award-winning series launched in 2012, every six issues consists of a story arc and then the creators would take a three month break before picking up again with the next arc. This time around, though, the break will be much longer.
RELATED: Saga Creators Would ‘Absolutely’ Love A Musical Adaptation by Lin-Manuel Miranda
In the column, Vaughan explained:
“After fifty-four issues and over 1,200 consecutive pages of sequential storytelling together, Fiona and I have decided to take an extended break before we eventually reunite with Saga #55. And unlike our usual three months of ‘Vacationanza’ between arcs, we plan to pause publication of this series for at least the next year.
This obviously wasn’t a decision we took lightly, but Fiona and I feel a responsibility to keep making the very best comic we can, and we both agreed that he only way to eventually finish the epic saga we set out to tell was with this one significant… let’s call it… Intermission!”
RELATED: Saga #50 Celebrates a Milestone By (Mostly) Ignoring It
Vaughan further noted that the intermission will allow them to “creatively recharge (and to reconnect with our non-fictional families)”
Besides being one of the most critically acclaimed comic books in the industry, Saga is also one of Image’s best-selling titles after The Walking Dead, so the loss of the series for over a year is significant. It is also interesting to note that Staples and Vaughan have both worked on multiple other projects during their production of Saga, with Staples launching the Archie reboot with Mark Waid for Archie Comics in 2015 and Vaughan launching many titles since Saga began, including Paper Girls with Cliff Chiang, We Stand on Guard with Steve Skroce and both The Private Eye and Barrier with Marcos Martin. Therefore, the fact that they now need over a year to “recharge” speaks a lot to how much work they put into their series.
Earlier this year, Vaughan noted that they were not even halfway through the series, so it sounds like this saga might go on past 100 issues, which is great news for comic book fans. We will just have to wait a little bit longer to get to that 100th issue.
Saga #54 is out this Wednesday.

What We Learned From MARVEL COMICS' October 2018 Solicitations
from newsarama.com https://ift.tt/2v2ZZB3
Marvel Teases the Death of the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
In comic book history, there is a bit of a tradition with storylines dubbed “The Death of ____,” with some famous examples being “The Death of Superman,” Death of Wolverine and “Death of Spider-Man” (in the Ultimate Universe). While comic books love to fake readers out, when the comics actually call the storyline “Death of,” they typically follow through on that threat. That does not bode well for Squirrel Girl, as Marvel is teasing a new Unbeatable Squirrel Girl storyline called “The Death of Squirrel Girl.”
The story was teased in the solicitations for Marvel’s October releases.
RELATED: Squirrel Girl Could Become Marvel’s Next Deadpool
The solicit reads:
THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #37
- RYAN NORTH (W)
- DEREK CHARM (A)
- Cover by ERICA HENDERSON
- It’s the latest issue of the all-ages smash hit, THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL! She’s defeated Galactus! She’s defeated Doctor Doom! Who KNOWS what fun adventures she’ll get up to THIS month!
- Well, we do. And you may want to brace yourselves for this, because this issue begins an all-new story arc called…”THE DEATH OF SQUIRREL GIRL”!
- Has the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl been BEATEN? Is this TRULY the end of Doreen Green? We haven’t canceled the comic so it doesn’t seem likely, but can you REALLY be sure? What if this issue installment actually IS the one Squirrel Girl dies in and you miss out because you didn’t buy it?
- So I guess what we’re saying here is everyone should definitely buy this comic.
- PLUS: This issue also has Wolverine in it for LITERALLY several pages!
- 32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99
The cover by original Unbeatable Squirrel Girl artist Erica Henderson shows a number of Squirrel Girl’s friends and enemies holding an empty casket with some question marks.
RELATED: Power Rangers, Squirrel Girl and the WWE: Steve Ditko in the 1990s
When Henderson announced her departure from the book a few months back, there was some concern that that was a sign that the book was perhaps heading for cancellation. She insisted that that was not the case at the time, but with a “Death of” storyline in the works, it is not surprising that the solicits also made a point to remind readers that “[w]e haven’t canceled the comic.”
With Squirrel Girl also set to star in an upcoming New Warriors television series, this is likely to be one of those rare “Death of” storylines that do not end with the actual death of the character, like “Death of Clark Kent.”
However, even if this is the real death of Squirrel Girl, she can rest a bit easier knowing that the story is guest-starring Wolverine, who previously died himself in Death of Wolverine.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #37 comes out this October.

Spider-Geddon Includes the Spider-Woman From Old Man Logan’s Reality
Marvel’s Spider-Man family of books is still feeling the results of Spider-Verse. The cross-dimensional team-up saw almost every Spider-Man or -Woman or -Ham that has been introduced uniting to fight back against the Inheritors. The upcoming “Spider-Geddon” event is set to bring the villains of that story back, along with another character we thought we’d seen the last of: The Spider-Woman of the Old Man Logan universe is returning for the event.
Ashley Burton debuted in Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s Old Man Logan, set in a post-apocalyptic possible future where the Red Skull united the villains and brought down the heroes. Among the relative survivors is a version of Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, the star of the current Old Man Hawkeye series. He eventually hooked up with Spider-Man’s daughter (yeah), leading to the birth of Ashley Burton, who grew up strong and ruthless, eventually usurping Kingpin and his domain. She was then one of the Spider-characters recruited for Spider-Verse. She was also actually among the handful of alternate-universe fodder to survive the event.
RELATED: Spider-Man’s Spider-Geddon and Venom Continue to Expand
Now it looks like she’ll be teaming up with various other Spiders in Spider-Force. The tie-in miniseries for Spider-Geddon is being written by Christopher Priest and features art by Paulo Siquiera. Her teammates include the 616-universe versions of Jessica Drew and Kaine. There will also be two new Spider characters, Astro Spider and Spider-Kid. The Marvel solicitations for October hint that this team is going on one of the most dangerous missions necessary to stop the Inheritors. And if there’s anyone necessary to bring the pain to Morlun and his family, this Spider-Woman is perfect for the job.
Check out the solicitation text below. Spider-Force #1, written by Christopher Priest with art by Paulo Siquiera, is slated for an October release.
SPIDER-FORCE #1 (of 3)
- Christopher Priest (W)
- PAULO SIQUIERA (A)
- Cover by SHANE DAVIS
- VARIANT COVER BY RYAN BENJAMIN
- VARIANT COVER BY TBA
- A SPIDER-GEDDON TIE IN!
- The deadliest mission in all of SPIDER-GEDDON has come up and Kaine has stepped forward for what he’s sure will be a suicide mission. But he can’t do it alone and Jessica Drew, A.K.A. Spider-Woman has signed on to help, but has Kaine told her the whole truth? With Ashley Barton, from the OLD MAN LOGAN universe, and two new characters (Astro-Spider and Spider-Kid), Kaine’s team is complete and their first mission may be their last!

The Marvel Universe Welcomes the Fantastic Four Home in October
After spending more than three years missing from the Marvel Universe, the Fantastic Four are finally coming back to the Marvel Universe next month with a brand new issue #1 written by Dan Slott and illustrated by Sara Pichelli.
While Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm have been around the Marvel U all this time, half of their team has been missing: Reed Richards, Susan Storm and their children Franklin and Valeria Richards haven’t been seen since the end of 2015’s Secret Wars event, a story that ended with the parents and children traveling the multiverse to create new worlds.
The long-awaited return of a Fantastic Four title came as a relief to fans, but it seems like issue #3 is where all the big reunions will finally come. Thanks to the advance solicits from Marvel’s October releases, we now know that the third issue of the comic series is when we will see the Fantastic Four finally reunite with the rest of the Marvel characters.
From what we can gather of the solicit description, it appears like Fantastic Four #1 and #2 will not reunite Ben and Johnny with the rest of the team just yet. Instead, perhaps the two issues will feature a buildup of sorts, which will finally culminate in a proper Fantastic Four reunion in issue #3. Not only that, the super-team will finally meet the rest of Marvel’s superheroes once again, in an issue that is said to guest star Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, the Hulk and more.
If the stunning cover by Esad Ribic is anything to go by, this is a reunion we simply won’t want to miss.

Marvel Zombies Gets A Franchise Reboot in October
Marvel Zombies are coming rising from the dead again but this time in a bold, terrifying new way.
Eisner-nominated writer W. Maxwell Prince (One Week in the Library) is teaming up with fan-favorite artist Stefano Raffaele (Hawkeye) to relaunch the horror-tinged alternate Marvel Universe this October. While the original twisted alternate Earth saw humanity eradicated as all of iconic Marvel heroes and villains were turned to cannibalistic, undead versions of themselves, the new comic book series promises a very different vision. The cover, illustrated by Juan Ferreyra, and full solicitation information from Marvel for the debut issue is below:
MARVEL ZOMBIE #1
- W. MAXWELL PRINCE (W)
- STEFANO RAFFAELE (A)
- COVER BY JUAN FERREYRA
- VARIANT COVER BY In-Hyuk Lee
- NEW FROM THE HOUSE OF IDEAS! MARVEL ZOMBIES IS BACK…WITH A TWIST!
- Years after an incurable zombie virus ravaged the world, a small colony of survivors is protected by the Marvel U’s few remaining heroes, including Spider-Man, Daredevil and the Falcon. But when their last chance at salvation arrives, will they be willing to sacrifice their own humanity in the process? From the twisted minds of ICE CREAM MAN writer W. Maxwell Prince and Stefano Raffaele (Generations: Hawkeye) comes the next macabre obsession for fans of The Walking Dead and The Road!
- 40 PGS./Parental Advisory …$4.99

The pairing of Prince and Raffaele is an inspired choice: Last year, the artist teamed with writer Kelly Thompson to celebrate the legacy of Hawkeye in Generations: The Archers. Meanwhile, Prince is no stranger to penning horror currently writing the sinister Image Comics anthology series Ice Cream Man with artist Martin Morazzo.
With the rebooted horror spinoff series focused on a desperate group of survivors facing an impossible decision, the survival horror title is sure to gain levels of gut-wrenching emotion previously unseen in the series. As the living attempt to escape heartbreakingly familiar faces from the Marvel Universe, they must ask themselves at what price salvation?

Marvel Debuts Andrea Sorrentino’s Cover for Old Man Logan’s Final Issue
After joining the Marvel Prime Universe in 2016, Old Man Logan‘s adventures in his ongoing solo series are coming to an end.
Revealed in Marvel’s October 2018 solicitations, Old Man Logan #50 by writer Ed Brisson and artist Ibraim Roberson, with a cover by artist Andrea Sorrentino, will serve as the series finale for the older Wolverine from the Wastelands.
RELATED: Kraven the Hunter Has Claimed Old Man Logan’s [SPOILER]
The cover shows Logan surrounded by many of the characters who played a part in his series and his life, including Bullseye, Elektra, Laura Kinney and her cloned sister Gabby, Old Man Hawkeye, Storm, Jubilee and many more.
Old Man Logan was one of the survivors of Secret Wars, finding himself in a world similar to the one he left, but drastically different. One of the major differences is in his world, he mistakenly murdered his fellow X-Men after being dupped by the Spider-Man villain, Mysterio.
With the opportunity for a second chance, Old Man Logan rejoined his fellow mutants in the pages of X-Men Gold and Weapon X. The move to cancel his ongoing series could have something to do with the main Wolverine returning from the dead. The former All-New Wolverine, Laura Kinney, has also lost the Wolverine moniker to return back to her former name of X-23.

Aside from the cover, the solicitation teases Old Man Logan making an exit from our world. With his healing factor not working as it should, Old Man Logan is definitely more vulnerable than he’s ever been, but would Marvel really kill the character off? Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time this happened, as the Logan motion picture concluded with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine passing away.
The cover and solicitation text for Old Man Logan #50, on sale in October, can be found below.

Avengers Gives Namor The Sub-Mariner A New Costume
The Avengers might currently be dealing with Loki and the Dark Celestials in Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness and Paco Medina’s The Avengers comic series, but already we know what Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’s next mission will be in the title.
Thanks to the advance solicits from Marvel’s October releases, we now know that Avengers #9 will venture underwater, to Atlantis. It appears as if war is brewing in the submerged kingdom, and the team of superheroes hope to prevent it from erupting. But even more noteworthy than that is the fact that Namor, the Sub-Mariner, will debut a new costume in the issue.
This new outfit is much different than what the King of Atlantis has worn before. In a bid to honor his original look, the Sub-Mariner is back to being bare-chested, but with a key difference: his arms and shoulders are completely covered by a black armor that appears to be crustacean-like. This armor also goes down to his legs and feet, signalling that the character is clearly dressed for combat. His pants, which are yellow and green, once again callback to his original appearance.
To complete the look, Namor also has a sea-shell shoulder strap that works both as a necklace and signature piece. This is a new look for the Sub-Mariner, but one that is also clearly Namor. With his pitchfork in hand, he doesn’t appear to be out to make any friends.
RELATED: Avengers: Tony Stark Debuts Iron Man’s Biggest Armor, Ever
This costume change comes quite soon after Namor received a new outfit courtesy of Jean Grey’s X-Men Red team, in order to protect himself and the rest of the mutants from microscopic Sentinels called Sentinites.
But while the X-Men Red costume reflected Namor as part of a team, this new appearance is different — it represents a change in his mentality. And if the solicit description is anything to go by, it will lead to something major. This isn’t just a costume change. It’s a statement.
