Alterna Comics’ Block Chain Ban for Creators Courts Controversy
Independent comics publisher Alterna Comics has issued a new code of conduct agreement forbidding its creators from using block chain applications on social media platforms. The updated code of conduct statement can be found on the company’s submissions page, which was posted later to their Twitter account.
Block chains or bots are a function of Twitter and other social media services that allow users to block accounts en masse with minimal effort and based on related followers, relevant hashtags or keywords. Comic creators use them to curb daily harassment from online agitators, but the new code of conduct from Alterna strictly prohibits their use.
RELATED: Marvel Will Remove Anti-Mormon Imagery from Amazing Spider-Man
“You are required and encouraged to actively promote your title on social media,” the new code of conduct states. “We do not condone the use of block bots/blind blocking/block chains or any other kind of program or practice that is used to block thousands of people, blindly, en masse.”
Alterna added that creators represent a creative team at the publisher and a network of retailers, who have to “confidently sell … comics to as many people as possible.” The code of conduct continues: “We have readers of all walks of life and it is paramount to us, that we encourage, promote and stand by our stance that comics are for everyone.”
RELATED: Father Launches Comic Starring Superhero With Down Syndrome For His Son
But, they reiterated if any creator has an “unwanted and poor experience” with a reader online, they “can block/mute individuals,” urging creators who feel threatened to “reach out to us and we’ll do everything within our power to work with you on how to handle this situation.”
The new code of conduct has been met with criticism by creators in the comics industry, some of whom use block chains to keep various social media services usable and free of vitriolic harassment. The code of conduct update is also considered by some to be unnecessarily intrusive and an example of Alterna putting monetary gains over the safety and sanity of its creators.
Founded in 2008, Alterna is known for such miniseries as Lillith Dark, The Chair and Mr. Crypt.

EXCLUSIVE: Take A Look Inside HOPE: A Comic For Flint, Michigan
Musician and writer Jonathan Diener is no stranger to comics or to the struggles of his hometown of Flint, Michigan. But following his DIY roots, he’s brought together both for shot at aiding a deserving cause in the city still racked by a lead-poisoned water supply.
Tomorrow, Diener and publisher Source Point Press will unveil HOPE: A Comic For Flint at a live-streamed concert in Flint. The anthology issue combines the might of local creators to raise money for The Compass, a program of Michigan Community Services Inc. aiding adults with developmental disabilities. Diener (best known as the drummer for punk band The Swellers) shared a first look inside his story with artist Craig Horky with CBR.
“I’ve been wanting to make a jump from music to comics for years, especially after seeing my peers like Max Bemis of the band Say Anything and former record label owner Matthew Rosenberg both writing for Marvel and making a big name for themselves,” said Diener. “My band, Baggage, has been raising money for the city of Flint through our releases, so it only made sense to do good for our city with my favorite medium: comics.”
The collective of creators decided to contribute their proceeds to The Compass after they saw a tangled web surrounding many of the higher profile charities and startups surrounding the ongoing water crisis. “The Flint Water Crisis is something everyone has heard about, but we have yet to see a resolution,” Diener said. “When we realized the millions of dollars being pumped into Flint from donations around the world were not necessarily going where it was supposed to, we decided to focus on underfunded nonprofits that could make a difference. We see what happens the second we hand over a check and that’s why working with The Compass was a no-brainer.”
Diener and Horky’s story focuses on the reality of explaining the world to kids in the wake of tragedy. The HOPE comic also includes work from writers El Whitcombe, Sam Moore, Robb Anthony and Carl Mizell, as well as artists Emily Woodruff, Kadee Spangler, Michelle Lukezic and Miranda Ireland. “I asked everyone to be a part of this comic because I loved their work, I knew they were driven and I wanted them to get a signal boost in something that can finally showcase their hard work,” Diener told CBR. “It’s expensive and time-consuming to make a comic from scratch, but for a good cause, we all had the motivation to make it happen. It wasn’t about us anymore. It was about Flint.”
Readers interested in checking out the stories and joining the cause can order HOPE now on Big Cartel, and the release concert will stream live tomorrow night, Sept. 1, via the comics’ Facebook page.

Dan Jurgens Thinks Guy Gardner Needs His Own Series Again
Writer Dan Jurgens is preparing to conclude his run on Green Lanterns, which focuses primarily on Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz, but the DC veteran thinks another member of the Green Lantern Corps may be primed to star in his own title again: Guy Gardner.
“I can’t understand why Guy Gardner doesn’t have a series,” Jurgens told ComicBook.com. “He should have a some kind of series, he’s a great, fun character.”
RELATED: Guy Gardner Is the Only Choice For the DCEU’s Green Lantern
Jurgens’ hopes for the future of Green Lantern comics doesn’t start and end with Guy, mind you, as he also expressed a desire to see stories told with other related characters. “Kilowog is a great, fun character to play around with,” he said. “There are certainly some other very intriguing possibilities that are out there in the world of the Green Lantern Corps.”
However, he said he particularly enjoyed writing Guy, and would like to see the character return more to his hot-headed, arrogant demeanor.
RELATED: The Bizarre Friendship Between Guy Gardner and Steel
Introduced in 1968 in DC’s Green Lantern #59, Guy Gardner was revealed to be a second worthy successor to the dying Abin Sur. However, Hal Jordan was closer to the crash site, and was selected by the power ring over Guy, who eventually became a backup Green Lantern. A fan favorite, the brash Guy was featured prominently in Justice League and Justice League International, and starred in his own series from 1992 to 1996.

Marvel Will Remove Anti-Mormon Imagery from Amazing Spider-Man
Marvel Comics is removing a troubling anti-Mormon reference from Ryan Ottley’s artwork in the recently released Amazing Spider-Man #4.
The issue, which was written by Nick Spencer, featured a panel in which Spider-Man was showing off some recent endorsement deals in the form of patches emblazoned on his iconic red-and-blue costume. One of the patches, however, referenced CES Letter, a book written by ex-Mormon Jeremy Runnells in which he denounces his former religion.
RELATED: Spider-Man’s Latest Story is Totally An Inversion of the Venom Arc
“The art reference in Amazing Spider-Man #4 was included without awareness by Marvel of its meaning,” Marvel told The Hollywood Reporter. “As a policy, Marvel does not permit hidden controversial messages in its artwork. The reference will be removed from all subsequent printings, digital versions and trade paperbacks.”
“I’ve spoken with Marvel about my recent artwork, and I have no animosity toward members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” Ottley added. “My entire family are members, as are many of my friends, and I would never include anything mean-spirited about them or their beliefs. The reference was in regards to a subject I am interested in and a personal decision I made in my life. It has nothing to do with the character, the story or Marvel.”
RELATED: What’s in Store For Spider-Man Once He’s Made Whole Again?
Of course, readers will likely recall a similar situation in April 2017, when artist Ardian Syaf included imagery referencing a passage from the Quran with strong anti-Jew and Christian overtones in X-Men Gold #1. However, while Marvel was quick to terminate Syaf’s contract following that incident, it appears the publisher is taking a more forgiving stance when it comes to Ottley, as there’s been no indication of any disciplinary action, outside of the artwork being revised.
The Amazing Spider-Man #4 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Names A New President
The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, the industry’s leading voice for free speech advocacy and education, has released a statement announcing that Christina Merkler has been named the organization’s new president following a unanimous vote of the board of directors. Merkler is the co-founder of popular online comic book retailer Discount Comic Book Service, which she owns and operates alongside her husband Cameron.
Joining Merkler on the board are Vice President Chris Powell, VP – Retailer Services at Diamond Comics Distributors; Treasurer Ted Adams, Founder of IDW; and CBLDF Secretary Dale Cendali, Partner at Kirkland & Ellis.
RELATED: Image Comics Partners With CBLDF for September Anti-Censorship Variants
“There’s never been a more important time to protect the First Amendment rights of the comic book community,” said Merkler. “As president, I look forward to working closely with the CBLDF board and the staff to continue the organization’s important work in supporting comic book retailers, creators, educators and librarians whose First Amendment rights are being challenged.”
For just over 30 years now, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has made it its mission to take on censorship in the comic book world, helping to cover the legal fees of comic book creators who have come under fire for their work and providing education on the dangers of censorship. The organization describes its goal as “protecting, preserving and promoting the freedom to read comics.”
RELATED: CBLDF, NCAC Co-Sponsor Comic Protest Guide Ahead of National Walkout
One of the most recent cases the CBLDF found itself in was the organizations steadfast defense of the popular, yet controversial graphic novel Fun Home, which was targeted for suppression by parents and conservative leaders for its portrayal of homosexuality in such places as South Carolina and New Jersey.
In regard to education and activism, the CBLDF, alongside the National Coalition Against Censorship, also released the free comic book Be Heard! by cartoonist Kai Texel earlier this year. The book aimed to help project students’ rights by helping them learn how to assert their rights to free speech, protest, assembly and petition, as well as providing helpful resources. The organization also recently partnered with Image Comics to produce a line of anti-censorship variant covers.

Shatterstar’s New Costume Showcased in Character Sheet
As Shatterstar gears up for his own Marvel limited series, writer Tim Seeley has shared a first look at the fan-favorite mutant’s updated costume, designed by artist Carlos Villa.
The character sheet prominently shows two color schemes, and calls attention to the character’s new poncho and signature twin swords. It also includes a depiction of Shatterstar without his helmet, and a front-and-back look at the new outfit. “I’d be afraid we’re showing too much,” Seeley tweeted. “But we haven’t even revealed the mystery villain yet!”

Shatterstar debuted in 1991 in The New Mutants #99, and became a key player in X-Force and X-Factor. He then made his cinematic debut this year in Deadpool 2 alongside fellow mutants Domino, Bedlam, Zeitgeist and Vanisher. This new mainstream exposure likely played a part in Marvel’s decision to give Shatterstar a new series to call his own.
Shatterstar #1, written by Tim Seeley, illustrated by Carlos Villa and Gerardo Sandoval, and featuring a cover by Yasmine Putri, will go on sale Oct. 3.

Stan Lee Pays Tribute to Jack Kirby: ‘He Was a Legend’
Stan Lee has written a brief tribute to the late Jack Kirby to commemorate the 101st birthday of the influential artist.
Lee, who collaborated with Kirby on such creations as the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the Incredible Hulk, Thor and the X-Men, retweeted comments by the artist’s grandson Jeremy Kirby, and added an appreciation of his own.
He was a legend, he truly was. Nobody could draw like Jack. – Stan https://t.co/eF2NjMUCGx
— stan lee (@TheRealStanLee) August 29, 2018
“He was a legend, he truly was,” Lee wrote. “Nobody could draw like Jack.” The tweet was signed “Stan,” which signifies that it comes directly from the 95-year-old writer and editor, and not from someone managing his social media accounts.
RELATED: Jack Kirby’s Grandson Celebrates The King’s 101st Birthday
To call Lee’s relationship with Kirby complicated would be an understatement. The two created many of Marvel’s best known, and most lucrative, characters, but a falling out led Kirby to leave the publisher for competitor DC Comics, where he caricatured Lee as the entrepreneur Funky Flashman. A debate has ranged for decades about who was the true creative genius behind their collaborations, and Lee has long been criticized for what Kirby’s fans view as downplaying the artist’s contributions.
Kirby passed away on Feb. 6, 1994, at the age of 76.

Ghost Rider Co-Creator Gary Friedrich Passes Away
Longtime Marvel Comics writer Gary Friedrich, co-creator of Ghost Rider and Son of Satan, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 75.
Tony Isabella posted the following statement on Facebook from Friedrich’s longtime friend and colleague, Roy Thomas:
I won’t go into details at this point, but I wanted to mention that one of my oldest and dearest friends, Gary Friedrich, passed away last night, from the effects of Parkison’s, which he had had for several years. That and his near-total hearing loss had left him feeling isolated in recent years, and his wife Jean seems content that he is finally at peace. As many of you will know, he did considerable work for Marvel during the late 1960s and 1970s, and for Charlton in the 1960s, including a remembered run on SGT. FURY, stints on CAPTAIN AMERICA, DAREDEVIL, SHIELD, and others, and of course the basic concept/creation of the motorcycle-riding Ghost Rider at Marvel. I’d know Gary since I was in college and he still in high school, when he came to work at the Palace Theatre in Jackson, MO, and some of my happiest memories of our days in the rock band he founded circa 1962 and which existed for a couple of years.
RELATED: Marvel, Gary Friedrich Agree to Ghost Rider Settlement
Gary Friedrich was born in Jackson, Missouri in 1943. As a teenager, he was friends with future Marvel writer and Editor-in-Chief, Roy Thomas. In the mid-1960s, Thomas, who had recently gone to work at Marvel Comics, contacted his old friend and suggested that he give comic book writing a chance. Friedrich (who is not related to Mike Friedrich, another comic book contemporary of the era) moved to New York and began writing for Charlton Comics.
After Roy Thomas began working for Marvel, Stan Lee began to pass a number of his regular writing assignments over to Thomas. Eventually, there were too many for Thomas to write himself, as well, and he began to add new writers to Marvel. Thomas got Friedrich a number of assignments, including a regular gig in 1967 on Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos, Friedrich’s longest running stint at Marvel, as he stayed on the title until 1971.
RELATED: Marvel Icon Marie Severin Suffers Stroke, Set to Enter Hospice Care
Friedrich filled in on a number of Marvel’s superhero titles before co-creating Ghost Rider in 1973’s Marvel Spotlight #5. Friedrich also wrote the Ghost Rider ongoing series that spun out of Marvel Spotlight. During this time, he also co-created Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan.
Friedrich wrote for Skywald’s black and white horror magazines in the mid-1970s. After being one of the writers for the rival comic book company, Atlas/Seaboard Comics, that former Marvel owner Martin Goodman launched in 1975, Friedrich left comics entirely in 1978. He returned in the 1990s briefly to write Bombast for Topps Comics, reuniting with his old Sgt. Fury art team of Dick Ayers and John Severin.
In recent years, Friedrich is best known for his lawsuit against Marvel in 2007, claiming that the rights to Ghost Rider defaulted to him in 2001. He lost the lawsuit in 2011 but the ruling was overruled on appeal in 2013. In September of 2013, Friedrich and Marvel agreed to a settlement.

DC’s Red Hood and the Outlaws Is Getting a New Name
WARNING: The following article contains minor spoilers for Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual #2, released this week by DC.
The recent changes to the status quo of DC’s Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual don’t end with the disappearance of Artemis or Bizarro, or the parting of Jason Todd and Roy Harper. The title is undergoing a name change, at least temporarily.
Writer Scott Lobdell revealed the series will be rechristened Red Hood: Outlaw with October’s Issue 27, which was solicited under the previous name.
RELATED: DC Debuts Jason Todd’s New Red Hood Mask, Costume & Emblem
“Without a buddy, Jason is not going to be as light as he has been in the past,” he told Newsarama. “He’s not going to be Frank Castle morose — but more like Clint Eastwood in his earlier movies. He’s going to be a man of much fewer words and much more violence. Having lost his partners, and Batman, he has a lot of feelings he’s going to keep bottled up.”
Lobdell emphasized the series will be called Red Hood: Outlaw “for now,” which suggests Jason eventually may reunite with his former partners. He also assured fans of Artemis and Bizarro that they won’t get the “short shrift” in this new era, which sees Pete Woods come on board as artist with September’s Issue 26.
Red Hood: Outlaw #27, by Scott Lobdell and Pete Woods, goes on sale Oct. 10 from DC.

Marvel Icon Marie Severin Suffers Stroke, Set to Enter Hospice Care
Longtime Marvel Comics artist and colorist, Marie Severin, who was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2001, recently suffered a stroke and is currently in hospice care at a nursing home.
Comic book historian Jon B. Cooke shared the news on his Facebook page, noting,
Sad news to report from a niece of Marie Severin:
“We got news Marie had a stroke and is going back to the nursing home with hospice care. They say she cannot move but is still smiling. Very sad, she is one if a kind.”
Godspeed to the Mirthful One. You are loved.
Severin, who is 89 years old, suffered a stroke back in 2007, as well.
RELATED: Marie Severin gets spotlight in ‘The Mirthful Mistress of Comics’
Severin broke into the comic book industry in the late 1940s when her older brother, comic book artist John Severin (1922-2012), asked her to color one of his stories for EC Comics. She did such a good job that she was soon the regular colorist for EC Comics. When EC Comics’ comic book line went out of business following the institution of the Comics Code Authority (which seemed almost designed specifically to put EC Comics out of business), Severin worked for Atlas Comics a little bit before leaving comic books entirely to go work at the Federal Reserve.
In the late 1950s, Severin began to get back into comic books, working for Atlas again doing some production work. As Atlas turned into Marvel and began to expand, Severin’s work for them expanded, as well. By the end of the 1960s, Severin was the main colorist at Marvel while also doing the occasional penciling job. When the Hulk gained his own series, Incredible Hulk, Severin was the penciler for the first five issues of the series.
RELATED: The ‘Marvel Method’ As Depicted in Actual Marvel Comics
Severin was a particularly gifted artist when it came to likenesses, so she was a perfect artist for Marvel’s parody comic book series, Not Brand Echh. In the early 1970s, Severin gave up her job as Marvel’s lead colorist (handing the assignment over to comic book veteran George Roussos, who continued in the role until the 1980s) so that she could do more penciling work.
She co-created Spider-Woman in 1976, designing her iconic costume. In the 1980s, she began working in Special Projects for Marvel, doing a lot of licensed work (again, her likenesses were always amazing). She was let go by Marvel during their restructuring following their late 1990s bankruptcy. She continued working as an artist until retiring in the mid-2000s.

From Batman and Robin doing an homage to the Beatles to the Legion of Super-Heroes paying tribute to famed Superman artist Curt Swan, DC Comics has a strange history of their characters interacting with the real world. When everything seems alright, Plastic Man tells viewers that he’s off to Dallas to check on the other convention. Taylor played the Pliable Paladin in the live-action bumpers for The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show, which aired on ABC from 1979 until 1981.
Remember when the guy who played the live-action Plastic Man during the bumpers for The Plastic Man Comedy Adventure Hour cartoon thought 3-8 year olds would LOVE political bits at the DNC in 1980? https://t.co/N6nzJ6Szkp
— Scott Bromley (@Scott_Bromley) August 29, 2018
So, how did Plastic Man of all characters get chosen to be the superhero representative of the convention instead of a bigger name character like Batman or Wonder Woman? Taylor explain how the strange piece of media came to be in a 2011 interview with author Mac Tyler Nobleman for his blog, Noblemania.
According to Taylor, Plastic Man visiting the DNC was part of an attempt to revive the living newspaper theatrical movement from the 1930s. The project saw stage actors come together to deliver the news of the day as if they were on the radio. With the help of his friend Jeff Watchel (who is now the president of NBCUniversal International Studios), Taylor and a cameraman set their sights on the DNC.
RELATED: Swamp Thing: Underworld Director Will Reportedly Helm Pilot Episode
“[Watchel] applied for the credentials again and got them,” said Taylor. “I had the character and outfit and he had the camera so [we said] let’s just do this ambush on the DNC and see if we can make something fun. I think Steve Whiting got the equipment. We had only two media credentials at a time so we had to swap off. Jeff lugged around 70 pounds of equipment and he’s not a big guy. Created this guerrilla piece mostly for the fun of it.”
So, while this was nothing more than lighthearted fun, it was still one of the oddest examples of a DC character interacting with the real world. But then again, this is Plastic Man, and silliness is his specialty.

Jack Kirby’s Grandson Celebrates the King’s 101st Birthday
August 28 marks what would have been comic book legend Jack Kirby‘s 101st birthday. To honor Kirby’s birthday, his grandson, Jeremy, posted a short tribute on Twitter dedicated to his late grandfather.

Very few figures in the comic book industry can claim to be as influential as Jack Kirby. He is best known for his tenure with Marvel Comics, during which he, alongside Stan Lee, co-created such seminal and iconic characters as the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, Captain America, Peggy Carter, Red Skull, Thor, Hulk, Nick Fury, Ant-Man, Wasp, the Inhumans and the X-Men.
Kirby also lent his talents to DC Comics, most notably to create the New Gods, a race of characters that includes the likes of Darkseid, Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Orion, Tigra, Steppenwolf and the Female Furies, as well as such concepts as the Anti-Life Equation and Mother Boxes.

Jeff Lemire On Comicsgate: ‘The Time Is Now to Speak Up’
Writer/artist Jeff Lemire has elaborated on his stance against Comicsgate, a movement whose members generally oppose what they view as the “forced diversification” of mainstream comic books. Their crusade has frequently resulted in the online targeting of female, LGBT and ethnic-minority creators, and those dubbed “social justice warriors,” under the guise of criticism.
Known for a body of work that ranges from Essex County and Sweet Tooth to Old Man Logan and Descender, Lemire joined acclaimed artist Bill Sienkiewicz and others last week in pushing back against Comicsgate following the online harassment of Marsha Cooke, wife of the late cartoonist Darwyn Cooke. “Comicsgate is based on fear, intolerance, bigotry and anger,” Lemire tweeted on Aug. 22. “The comics creators emerging today are too talented, too smart and too loud to be beaten by these weak people. It’s time we all started standing up for one another.”
RELATED: X-Men Red Scribe Tom Taylor Weighs In On Comicsgate
The Eisner Award winner elaborated Friday in a blog post, in which he urged other comics creators to take a public stand against the targeted harassment campaign.
“I had hoped more creators who, like me, have had the privilege to create comics free of this sort of abuse and scrutiny, because we are white, and we are men, would have joined me in denouncing Comicsgate,” he wrote, in part. “I know many of you feel the way I do. I noticed that many popular and significant creators ‘liked’ my tweet. And that’s great, but it’s not enough. If we can’t use our voices to stand up for the next generation of comics creators, editors and the next wave of voices that will keep our medium alive and vital, then what’s the point of having them?
“The time is now to stand up for female comic book creators,” Lemire continued. “The time is now to stand up for transsexual comic book creators. The time is now to stand up for creators of color and of all sexual orientations, races and religions. If we don’t do that, we don’t deserve to keep making comics ourselves.”

X-Men Scribe Tom Taylor Weighs In On ‘Comicsgate’
Comic book writer Tom Taylor (X-Men: Red, Injustice) is the latest industry figure to take a big stand against the “Comicsgate” gatekeeping movement. Taylor specifically took aim at those who push bigotry under the guise of criticism, tweeting, “I believe comics are for everyone. There is no excuse for harassment. There is no place for homophobia, transphobia, racism or misogyny in comics criticism.”
I believe comics are for everyone.
There is no excuse for harassment.
There is no place for homophobia, transphobia, racism or misogyny in comics criticism.— Tom Taylor (@TomTaylorMade) August 26, 2018
Taylor encouraged everyone who shared his views on comics to copy and paste his tweet to their own profile. In addition to the countless fans who took the time to share the tweet, so to did numerous other creators in the comic book industry, including Jason Latour (Spider-Gwen, Southern Bastards), who added, “Nuance, ambiguity, and debate are part of art. You can criticize work without dehumanizing the folks who make it.”
RELATED: Jeff Lemire and Bill Sienkiewicz Denounce ‘Comicsgate’
Other notable figures in the comic book world who helped to spread Taylor’s message include Kelly Thompson (West Coast Avengers, Mr. & Mrs. X), Jamal Igle (The Wrong Earth, Iron Fist/Wolverine), Rob Williams (Judge Dredd, Suicide Squad), Sina Grace (Iceman), Jackson Lanzig (Gotham City Garage, Batman & Robin Eternal) and Marvel Comics editor Heather Antos.
Additionally, Taylor’s Twitter feed is flooded with his enthusiastic reblogs of fans, creators and commentators alike who helped him spread his message. He expressed his gratitude in a follow-up tweet, which read, “I see everyone copying and pasting this, and you’re pretty damn awesome. Please keep it going.”
If Taylor’s goal was to send a clear message to the comic book sphere, it’s safe to say he’s been rather successful, as the tweets only continue to pour in.

The Captain Marvel Animated Series That Could’ve Been
In Marvel’s long history, many characters have had planned TV adaptations that never went through due to one reason or another, like Ghost Rider and Night Thrasher. And apparently, the Female Fury herself, Captain Marvel, has joined those ranks, as the character almost had her own animated series.
RELATED: What Made X-Men: The Animated Series So Unique (And Why It Couldn’t Last)
As revealed by animator Ben Bates, long before he had even heard of the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, he had developed an animatic for a proposed Captain Marvel animated series, which he also wrote and hired voice actors for. However, despite Carol Danvers’ more prominent role in modern times since taking up the Captain Marvel mantle, Marvel turned the series down. Luckily, Bates has uploaded the animatic to his YouTube channel for fans to see his work.
From the looks of the animatic, the show would have been fairly lighthearted, and taken more from Carol’s early days as the original Ms. Marvel, as no one knows she and Captain Marvel are one and the same. The series would have also showcased an anime style, as depicted through the character designs, action, and Carol’s transformation sequence. And based on her appearance in the animatic, it seems Spider-Woman would have been a recurring character in the series, and viewers do get hints of the larger Marvel Universe with image cameos from Turbo, Big Bertha, and Ultragirl.
RELATED: Ghost Spider Gets the Spotlight in Marvel Rising: Initation Featurette
Hollywood is a strange and fickle place where some properties have better luck getting adaptations than others. But if next year’s Captain Marvel movie does well, Marvel could revive the project to capitalize on the film’s success — you never know. After all, Daredevil had two wait three decades before he finally got a TV series, and if Matt Murdock can get a TV show, so can Carol Danvers. Luckily for fans, Carol will play a role in the upcoming Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors franchise, so that may whet their appetites for the time being.

InkyPen Comics Subscription App Heads to Nintendo Switch in November
InkyPen, a new comic book subscription service, will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop come November, making it the marketplace’s first international non-game item.
This all-you-can-read program will launch simultaneously in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Russia, Africa and Australia for the price of $7.99 / €7.99 (or local equivalent.) This fee will grant users access to the entire InkyPen catalog, which includes over 10,000 titles from such publishers as IDW, Dynamite, Valiant, Les Humanoïdes Associés and Andrews McMeel.
RELATED: Kelly Thompson Talks About Her Dynamite New Nancy Drew Comic
The official InkyPen fact sheet details some of the features readers can expect from the service:
- All your comics, anywhere you go on Nintendo Switch.
- Read on Nintendo Switch in handheld mode or in TV mode.
- Comics, French BD, Manga: international products for international viewers.
- All you can read, subscription based, no need to buy individual issues.
- Over 10,000 comic books for every style and taste.

“We have no intention of selling content piecemeal, there are other places for that,” said InkyPen CEO Ronan Huggard. “We’re bringing an all-you-can-read model to the international community.”
Huggard went on to explain his own personal reasons for founding InkyPen.
“I could never afford to truly explore comics growing up, or even at university. Not because I didn’t have enough money, but because they were just too expensive for a student to justify buying,” said Huggard. “InkyPen solves this.”
InkyPen will launch on the Nintendo eShop sometime in November. An official release date has not yet been set.

Serena Williams’ Black Panther-Inspired Catsuit Banned at French Open
Black Panther fans who enjoyed Serena Williams’ catsuit at this year’s French Open won’t have the chance to do so next year as the tennis tournament has placed a ban on the outfit.
The tournament has officially confirmed it will be introducing a stricter dress code for 2019, hinting that Williams’ skintight, all-black athletic wear wasn’t up to standard.
RELATED: Marvel’s Black Panther Setting Its Sights On Best Picture Oscar Nomination
Williams previously stated that the suit, which she said helps to reduce blood clots, made her feel like a “superhero” and the “Queen of Wakanda” at Roland-Garros.
“It will no longer be accepted,” said French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli to Tennis magazine. “I believe we have sometimes gone too far. You have to respect the game and the place.” Giudicelli didn’t provide details on the new rules and regulations, but made it clear they weren’t as strict as Wimbledon, which requires players to wear all-white outfits.

The 36 year-old Grand Slam champion made her return to elite tournament action at the French Open last May following the birth of her daughter the previous September. She wore the catsuit throughout the first three rounds before pulling out of this year’s edition due to injury.

Jeff Lemire and Bill Sienkiewicz Denounce ‘Comicsgate’
Following a controversy involving Marsha Cooke, the widow of the late comic book legend, Darwyn Cooke, both Jeff Lemire and Bill Sienkiewicz separately posted denunciations of the ‘Comicsgate’ movement.
In a recent video interview on YouTube, comic book creator Billy Tucci casually referenced the late Darywn Cooke. This led to a fan to post an old interview of Darwyn Cooke and claim that Cooke would have supported the ‘Comicsgate’ movement, which generally argues against what they feel is “forced diversification” of comic books. This has often led to harassment of minority creators and LGBTQ creators by a number of the supporters of Comicsgate. Marsha Cooke then reactivated her Twitter account to say that her husband was not a supporter of Comicsgate.

Cooke stated, “Hi guys, this is Darwyn’s wife and I can guarantee he thought you comics gate idiots were a bunch of crybaby losers ruining comics. because you are.”
Cooke’s response quickly drew a number of harassing responses from Comicsgate supporters.

Star comic book writer Jeff Lemire then chimed in on his view of Comicsgate, posting on Twitter:
Comicsgate is based on fear, intolerance, bigotry and anger. The comics creators emerging today are too talented, too smart and too loud to be beaten by these weak people. It’s time we all started standing up for one another.

RELATED: Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Tran Breaks Silence About Online Harassment
Star comic book artist Bill Sienkiewicz then joined in on his Facebook account:
What you’re each promoting individually is not some divine creative dispensation; it’s just you being an asshole. Collectively, you’re a gaggle, a clan,(-potentially with a k unsubtle as that shot may be)- a veritable bag’s worth of douches. Whatever the name you give for your assembly, you’re not the Avengers. You’re still just a bunch of assholes.
Comics isn’t a boys club. It’s not “NO (insert ethnic group, gender, religion, sexual preference here) ALLOWED.” It’s a club , a meeting place a forum for creators. Of all stripes. Like a real life Legion of Super Heroes, or a Justice League. Only with pen and ink paper and Cintiqs and laptops and…
Stop being the creepy racist misogynist uncles showing up at reunions and pissing in the punchbowl to disprove your beta standing. Stop being the weird cousins the entire world points to as the definition of every “comic book nerd” stereotype. Or do it far away from us. Stop being whiny misunderstood victims bitching bout favoritism, intolerance, and sexism. You’re slinging inky-black aspersions, obliviously crying racism in your Wite-Out™. You’re damned right some corrections need to be made; starting with the guys in the mirror first.
A large number of other comic book creators have voiced their support for Cooke, as well as to voice their agreement with Lemire and Sienkiewicz’s statements.
Writer/artist Phil Hester perhaps summed it up best by his Tweet, “I can’t grasp how someone could love the Marvel universe– one full of heroes who are in one way or another outcasts, but who still choose to fight for the world explicitly rejecting them– and come away with even a drop of intolerance in their soul.”

The publisher has dropped clues that a revival of the original Defenders is in the works. In Marvel’s October 2018 solicitations, Avengers #9 and The Immortal Hulk #7 see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes clash with a founding Defender. Avengers #9 takes the team to Atlantis to stop a civil war, with the issues debuting a new costume for the Sub Mariner, while The Immortal Hulk #7 has the Avengers looking to apprehend Bruce Banner’s new immortal alter-ego.

Marvel Delays Tony Stark: Iron Man #4-6
Something seems to be going on at Marvel Comics, as the fourth, fifth, and sixth issues of the current Iron Man series, Tony Stark: Iron Man, have been given new release dates. Issue #7 may soon follow, but Marvel has yet to reveal the reason for the delays.

As reported by Newsarama, Issues #4 and #5 of the series will be rescheduled for Oct. 3 and Oct. 17, and Issue #6 will hit stands on Nov. 21, meaning there will be no issues of the title in September. This schedule change could also affect the release of Issue #7, as that was also slated for release on Nov. 21. The seventh issue may be given a new release date to avoid overlapping with Issue #6.
As of right now, neither Marvel or the current writer of the series, Dan Slott, have explained the reason for the delays. Production problems could be one cause, or Marvel may have something big planned for those dates that could have temporarily delayed the issues, but for now there seems to be no clear answer.
